Jeremiah 49

Passage Lookup – Read or Listen

What countries and tribes are judged in this chapter? How is God’s judgment personified? How certain is it? To what extent can your nation be described as at ease, that dwells securely? What is the pride of your heart?

Abraham Lincoln - head & shoulders portrait

Someone ask Abe Lincoln one time if he thought God was on his side. Lincoln thoughtfully said, “I am not so concerned about God being on our side but rather that we are on God’s side for God is always right.” In this reading are the prophecies of Ammon, Damascus, Kedar, Hazor, and Elam. These were mighty countries or tribes at one time but they were not right with the Almighty. Some forget that God is all powerful and our true safety and happiness is obtained when the inner battles of the soul are won.

Hope gives optimism to overcome despair, faith brings courage in a time of doubt, and love subdues hate to conquer the enemy of our souls. List any videos you are reminded of as you read this passage. Here is a link to one for this reading: We All Bow Down – Lenny LeBlanc. My hope is that it inspires you as you spend this day with God.

Pray today for those inner battles and ask God to help focus more on the happiness found in daily walking by faith. The world might be broken but it can be fixed when hearts are surrendered to Jesus. Be thankful for the fulfilled promise in Christ who has subdued the enemies of our souls.

Jeremiah 48

Passage Lookup – Read or Listen

The people of Moab had enjoyed prosperity and security. Their land was fertile and they received more rain. They were at ease. What are the dangers of such a state? Why?

In this passage, we are given the prophecies against Moab which is a region that had enjoyed prosperity and security. Their land was fertile and they received more rain than others. They were at ease but there are dangers of such a state. There is the danger of losing focus. Success can lead to complacency. People of success can lose focus on God. Think about good times and bad times. When were you more focused on the things of God? Was it during difficult times or in the good times?

I remember some points made by my Pastor Steve Ramsdell in a sermon. He said that we should let God lead us. We should put Him first in our Finances, our Interests, our Relationships, our Schedule, and Troubles. The first letters in these words spell FIRST and we should put God first. When we are focused on the resources God gives us, our power to solve problems multiplies tremendously. Our focus should not be a sometime thing; it should be an all time thing.

Today, I’m praying for the discipline to put God first at all times and listen through the lessons of life, other people, and most of all, through the Bible.

Jeremiah 47

Passage Lookup

What image depicts the destruction of the Philistines? How do you explain God’s use of pagan nations to accomplish his purposes? To what extent does he work in similar way today? Why?

This is what the Lord says in Jeremiah 47:2: “See how the waters are rising in the north; they will become an overflowing torrent. They will overflow the land and everything in it, the towns and those who live in them.”  Living by the principles found in the Bible is essential; they never let you down. Live, endure, and march on with the help of God whose angels protect from potential enemies.

Some things are just common sense. A husband doesn’t tell his wife that he’s going on a hunting trip on her birthday. He doesn’t tape a football game over their wedding video. To live a long and happy life, there are certain things he just doesn’t do.

Today, I’m trying to understand what to do. I’m thinking about certain things in my life that go against God and some steps I can take to get it right? I’m praying today for understanding and the ability to make the needed changes.

Jeremiah 45-46

Passage Lookup

To what extent are you God’s servant? What are your spiritual obligations?

Jeremiah continues to give prophecies on what will happen and what the people need to do but very few listen and take him serious. Being a servant of God is hard work and discouraging at times.

My Pastor Steve Ramsdell has noted in a sermon before, there are huge dividends for being a servant of God for His bank never goes broke and there are rewards for encouraging others.

As we go toward the reward, lower expectations for the present but raise them for the future because adversity prepares more than comfort and prosperity. We should pray for the ability to have the right expectations about this world but continue to know the reward in the other world is very encouraging indeed. Take these words from Philippians 4:19, God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
