Lamentations

Posted on June 17, 2011 by Mark Shields

I’ve completed my journey through the book of Jeremiah. Lamentations is the sequel to the book of Jeremiah. It portrays the capture and destruction of Jerusalem. Many times our greatest enemy is ourselves. We need to make war against anger, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, and gluttony. Here is a link to a video: Make War – John
Piper.

Our weapons to fight this spiritual war are faith, hope, charity, fortitude, prudence, justice, and temperance. The problems we go through in life are not stop signs; they are guidelines and we can still find joy because it is at those times that God will produce a sure sign to success. That sign points
to Jesus Christ our Savior.

Passage Lookup – Read or Listen

Jeremiah had a message and a role in God’s plan. What is your place and purpose in God’s plan for today’s world?

Jeremiah’s purpose was to communicate the need to change course and to warn about a devastating future if they did not. Israel and Judah didn’t change course but through their adversity, we are enriched with this lesson: life is designed for eternity so we need to get to know the one and only God.

The good news is that a new territory waits for those who take in the lessons of the past, change course, get to know God, and set out to invest for eternal dividends. Do you feel a part of history? Believe you are and participate in your community. Find a role in your neighborhood, your local school, or your church. You can make a difference to future generations.

See yourself as God sees you. He thinks you are AWESOME! Pray that frustration is reduced but things like enthusiasm and concentration are increased. Pray that you invest your life in things that build a better community, city, state, and nation. Pray that you invest in the things that build a better YOU and returns eternal dividends.

Contrast what has happened to the Lord during Israel’s punishment and what will happen to other national gods during their country’s punishment. Account for the difference. What qualities of God are revealed in his building up and overthrowing of nations?

Babylon is a wealthy nation yet as prophesized by Jeremiah in this chapter; nothing will keep her secure if she is not on God’s side. The most important aspect of life is our relationship with God. Put hope in God for nothing in the world can give a more sense of security. Here is a link to a video: I Am – Mark Schultz. My prayer is that you have been blessed by this video and will bless others with what God has given you.

Today, I’m thankful for the lessons learned; I’m praying for you, my community, and for my own life. I’m praying that we are on God’s side because God always wins.

What is eventually in store for Babylon? How will God continue to assert his supremacy over other gods?

God speaks this prophecy through Jeremiah. He will begin to execute His judgment against Babylon through His people who will return to Him and unify with an everlasting covenant. God continues to assert His supremacy over other gods through people. It is the Lord that binds us; He cares about us and would like to use our talents
for His team.

God is supreme over other Gods because He loves you and sent His Son to die for you. Here is a video I’m reminded of as I read this passage: How Great Is Our God – Chris Tomlin.

Pray for understanding of your talents. What is it about you that God is currently using or can use for His great purposes? How can you dutifully serve on His team and find satisfaction for your soul. You are an important member of His team.
