Resistance

Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. – Hebrews 12:1

The post “An Hour Provides the Power” highlights the friends of a paralytic who were determined to relief their friend’s distress so they made an opening in the roof and lowered him down in front of Jesus. How can we go the extra mile to help a co-worker, neighbor, or friend?

The first step is to give God an hour and He will provide the power. Next time your day is filled with some resistance, smile at it, say thank You God, and know that God is big enough. Be inspired by songs like Unrestrained by Jeremy Camp and throw away the things that hold you back in order to gain the power to overcome the resistance.

An Hour Provides the Power

One extra hour in our day changes the temperature on average from 30, 40, 50 degrees to 80, 90,100 degrees. The difference from winter to summer is like the difference when Christ is in our life. Give God an hour and He will provide the power to warm your heart every day with a brighter future.

In our previous post, we noted that Jesus had driven out impure spirits, He had healed many in Capernaum, and He had gone to a solitary place to pray. A few days later as we read now in Mark 2:1-12, He came back into Capernaum to teach and the people gathered in such large numbers that there was no more room (v. 2).

Four men brought a paralytic man to Jesus because they had faith that Jesus could heal their friend. They couldn’t get the paralyzed man to Jesus because of the crowd so they made an opening in the roof and lowered him down on his mat in front of Jesus.

When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven” (v. 5). The scribes were thinking to themselves that Jesus didn’t have authority to forgive sins and said Jesus was blaspheming! They were right that only God can forgive sin but wrong in thinking Jesus was not God in the flesh.

So the take away from today’s passage is that the first concern Jesus had was to forgive his sins. Once sins are forgiven in an individual, there is power for amazing results. We may not feel good at times, we may feel lonely, we may feel inferior or just physically worn out but these are the things that create resistance and ultimately make us stronger; the resistance like lifting a weights to build muscle.

The resistance of water as we swim laps to burn those extra calories or the hill as we run to the top. Without resistance, the wings of a plane can’t produce lift and fly through the air. Without resistance to fear, there is no courage. Next time our day is filled with some resistance, let us smile at it, say thank You God, and know that God is big enough. Let us give Him an hour and have faith that He will provide the power to keep going.

Lord this day, we have been inspired by the passage. Like the four men that made a way for the paralyzed man to come in front of You, provide in us the compassion and determination to help a co-worker, neighbor, or friend to come before You. The results just might be just as amazing as in today’s passage. Amen.

Worship 08-23-2020

Get a great start to your Sunday and for the week with inspiring music and a great message!

Today’s message has three ways to maintain hope and can be seen at this Link.

Seek out the treasure that gives more than could be imagined. Like a small mustard seed that grows into a large plant, so is hope planted in the hearts of people to impact the world. Like yeast that strengthens and gives flavor to bread, small simple acts of kindness can make a tremendous impact around the whole world. We have the opportunity today to make that impact with the hyper-connectivity of technology.

Look Up for Direction

This day with God, start with clear thoughts. Sort out priorities and plan the day ahead. Also, gain inspiration from the song “Look Up Child” by Lauren Daigle.

Mark Shields's avatarThis Day With God - A Spiritual Journey

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. – Proverbs 3:5-6

A take away from the post “Sorting Out Priorities and Planning” is that Christ rose early before the day began to ask for guidance, sort out priorities, and plan the day. This is something we should do too so our thoughts are clear and we start each day with adjusted priorities for the sake of the ultimate mission.

Be inspired today by the song Look Up Child by Lauren Daigle. When darkness seems to win or the world seems to be crumbling, look up to God for direction. He is in control for every situation.

Beside Me to the Finish

Be assured of victory because of Jesus. It’s not anything we can do as individuals but by accepting Jesus as Savior, we have someone to lean on and help carry us to the finish line.

Mark Shields's avatarStep Ahead

The picture below is Derek Redmond who tore his hamstring while running the 400m in the ’92 Olympics. That’s Redmond’s father in the picture who came down from the stands to help him cross the finish line.

Our plans do not always work out but our Father in heaven has a plan that always works out and is there for us too!

No one wins all the time
Because some are hamstrung,
Some are hobbled
But with Jesus, all is won
So see the victory
And you will never fail
As grace will give power
For you to prevail.

With Jesus, we have a connection with the Father and He is beside us to finish the race victoriously.
