The Way of Jesus

This day with God, we continue on the journey towards internalizing the principles taught by Christ. Reading today in Mark 2:18 through 3-6, the Pharisees and other legalists were looking for opportunities to accuse Jesus of breaking the Old Testament Law. Instead of going the way of the Pharisees, Jesus emphasized the need to harness the power of the Spirit; the constant, calm, and collected breeze of the Holy Spirit which provides power now and into eternity.

Many of the external religious observances were to bring attention to self-righteousness. They were rituals of deception to make others think they were being devout instead of authentic expressions from their heart. The issue of fasting during certain days of the calendar is raised in verse 18. John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting but the disciples of Jesus were not so the legalists offered their criticism.

Working on the Sabbath was another issue raised. Jesus was criticized because His disciples were plucking grain as they walked through a wheat field on a Sabbath. There were no fences during those times so traveling through fields from place to place was common. On this occasion, the disciples were hungry so they plucked the grain from the field to eat. The Pharisees accused them of working on the Sabbath.

On another occasion, a man with a shriveled hand was in the synagogue and Jesus healed the man. The Pharisees considered healing on the Sabbath as working so they accused Jesus of breaking their legalistic beliefs. The Pharisees were held back by their man-made laws and traditions.

But Jesus was teaching another way. His Way is about doing what’s right, about real life and not getting caught up in ridiculous mindless man-made laws or ceremonies. Christianity is about expressing our faith by internalizing the principles taught by Christ so they are a natural part of who we are.

This day with You Lord, we know the best Way is Your Way. To internalize Your guiding principles which are essentials for life. There are things that come up in life that require us to make decisions based on no precedence. In our ever-changing world, we must rely on Your guiding principles. By studying Your Word, we are battle tested to take on the challenges we face and we can rest assured in knowing Your Way will lead us to where we need to go and help us be the people we need to be. Amen.

Free To Be Who He Made Us To Be

Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them. – Mark 2:13

The post “Keeping Others In Mind” was about the large crowds that began to follow Jesus. At times, Jesus associated with sinners and tax collectors; people not thought of highly by society.

The Pharisees raised criticism but in a calm way and with reasoning, Jesus simply stated his main purpose. To teach about forgiveness of sins, helping people to become spiritually healthy, and asking for them to follow His Way.

Crowds would flock to be in the presence of Christ. Since people were drawn to Jesus, shouldn’t they be drawn to us? Take inspiration from the song Free To Be Me by Francesca Battistelli and believe Jesus can shape us to be free to who He made us to be.

Keeping Others In Mind

This day as we read Mark 2:13-17, Jesus went out beside the lake to teach and a large crowd followed. Let us follow the example of Jesus by being patient and kind; keeping others in mind so that we have an impact on them.

In today’s passage, a tax collector named Levi was sitting at his tax collector’s booth and as Jesus saw him, He ask Levi to follow. Jesus must have had a large effect on Levi since he immediately obeyed Jesus and even invited Jesus over for dinner. Many other tax collectors and sinners came over to eat with them. The teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw that Jesus was eating with sinners and tax collectors so they protested who Jesus associated with.

Tax collectors were considered to be in collaboration with the hated pagan Roman government. They were detested during that time because of their dishonesty and how they put pressure on the people to pay unreasonable taxes or be put in jail. In response to the Pharisees, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners”.

This calm response of simply stating His purpose was consistent with what Jesus had been doing up to this point. He had been teaching about forgiveness of sins, helping people to become spiritually healthy, and asking for them to follow His Way.

This day with You Lord, we want to be free to be who You made us to be. To live our best life now, help us to love others like You first loved us. Not all people are pleasant and some may stab us in the back but Your Good News is for all as we have learned in today’s passage. The way You lived on earth Lord is our perfect example to follow. Help us to be Your friend and then be a friend to others. Let Your Good News flow out to others because of our peace, our encouragement, and with a faith in Your power to make amazing things happen. Amen.
