Boldly Stepping Ahead

Nehemiah took the initiative to talk to the king about his grief toward the condition of Jerusalem. Reading in Nehemiah 2, he prays before talking to the king about his wish to rebuild the city. After praying, Nehemiah’s next step was to get the kings approval and then for the king to tell others so authority would be granted.

Nehemiah received his plan from God. We should also go to God in prayer for the master plan. There are plans God will put in your heart when you seek to do good for the people around you; your family, your neighbors, or the people you work with. When He does, be attentive to the thoughts and images that come to mind. Make notes and keep track of progress so that at the end of the successful journey, details are easily retrievable for teaching others.

The request of Nehemiah was right, the timing was right, and God said “Go”. This day with God, let us seek to do the same in our good works.

Awesome Dads

There were many lessons to note from last Sunday’s message on “Awesome Dads”.  Senior Pastor: Rev. Steve Ramsdell gave the sermon message and below is an outline of the message. There is a podcast of each sermon at this Link.

The podcast came in handy this past week since my whole family has been fighting off some upper respiratory ailments and we stayed in. The notes in blue print below are my personal notes I took while watching the podcast. The notes in black below are provided by the church staff and are available to everyone by going to the podcast link and clicking on the PDF icon under each sermon.

A dad has an amazing impact on a child and on this world. While a child is young, they believe dads can do anything until at some point they understand that they can’t. That’s when we have a chance to point out that our heavenly Daddy can.

1. CELEBRATE THEIR CHILDREN’S INDIVIDUALITY.

“Train children how to live right, and when they are old, they will not change.” Proverbs 22:6 (NCV)

How can we be an awesome dad? Awesome dads find out how God wired their children and tries to support and encourage what God wants them to do.

“Be sure to do what you should, for then you will enjoy the personal satisfaction of having done your work well, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else.” Galatians 6:4 (NLT)

2. AFFIRM THEIR CHILDREN’S INFINITE VALUE.

“Not even a sparrow can fall to the ground without your Heavenly Father knowing it. … and you are much more valuable to Him than a whole flock of sparrows.” Matthew 10:29 & 31 (NLT)

A child’s value is not what value others assign to them but what value God assigns to them and we know that God places a high value on each individual; after all, He gave up His Son for all.

“God made all the delicate inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank You for making me so wonderfully complex. Your workmanship is marvelous….” Psalm 139:13-14 (NLT)

Everyone needs to be affirmed in a world that doesn’t do any of those things. Listen to children no matter how silly it may seem. Sometimes we let them know how valuable they are and don’t even know it. It was early last Sunday morning when I went into my daughter’s room to make sure she was okay. She’s had a bad cough for over a week and at times, was struggling to catch her breath. We had taken her to the doctor and he gave instructions on what to do; telling us that her lungs were clear and let her rest so it will get better. But you worry and so I checked on her. Later that morning, she asked me why I came into her room and I told her just to check and make sure she was okay. She smiled and knew how valuable she is.

3. BELIEVE IN THEIR CHILDREN’S POSSIBILITIES.

“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much….” Luke 16:10a (NIV)

Be a dad that believes in their child and values them by trusting them to try small task. Christ trusted the twelve disciples with His church so we should be able to trust our children with small task around the house.

“Each person must be responsible for himself.’ Galatians 6:4 (NCV)

If they accomplish small task, later in life they will be prepared to do bigger things.

4. DIRECT THEIR CHILDREN WITHOUT CONDEMNING.

“Correct your children while there is still hope; do not let them destroy themselves.” Proverbs 19:18 (NCV)

We all need direction and correction. When you sail the sea, there are many corrections made along the way. For a child, there can be many very tender, very loving corrections that can be made.

“When you talk, do not say harmful things, but say what people need – words that will help others become stronger. Then what you say will do good to those who listen to you.” Ephesians 4:29 (NCV)

Words are powerful so share words that are positive, uplifting, and hopeful.

5. LOVE THEIR CHILDREN UNCONDITIONALLY.

“Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.” Ephesians 4:32 (NLT)

“Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” 1 Corinthians 13:7 (NLT)

As I think back to the most meaningful point in the sermon for me, it would be this: it is best to believe in a child and value them by trusting them with small task. They may not be perfect at first but by letting them get the experience and the satisfaction of accomplishment, they will be prepared to do much bigger things that may change the world in the future.

Praise God for His Help

I enjoy growing in the Lord with you and how we can encourage each other in our daily walk. Courage is needed to face the truth or say no to what is wrong and yes to what is right. Today, I’d like to share this video to give a lift for this day with God: Empty Me – Jeremy Camp.

The moment we pray for more of God and less of our own desires, the power to change intangible aspirations into real plans of action are set in motion.

Rally Toward Great Works

Nehemiah returns to Jerusalem from exile to rally the people and rebuild the city walls of Jerusalem even against great hostility. Like in the example given in Nehemiah 1, we need to rally the building of the divine kingdom of God who maintains His covenant and love with those who love Him and obey His commands.

Prayer needs to precede any great mission and that’s exactly how Nehemiah begins this great work as he prays for success in obtaining favor with the Persian king. The lesson in this passage for me is to stop thinking my way but to think God’s way.

We can’t carry the load but God can. Our mission is to rally God’s people so the load is made light because of Jesus. Help others truly experience a deeper relationship with God through prayer. This day will be amazing because when we trust our concerns with God, our minds are set free. We then demonstrate composure and before we know it, difficulties vanish.

Today, I’m thankful for God’s gift in His Son Jesus; for the good thoughts and ideas presented to us that will rally us toward His great works.

Questions for Reflection – Nehemiah 1-3

Nehemiah rebuilding Jerusalem

Nehemiah rebuilding Jerusalem (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I’ve completed the book of Ezra and at this link is an index of the studies published so far. Along the journey, it was noticed how Ezra encourages the returned-exiles in the building of the temple. He teaches them how they are to worship God and follow His law in restoring Jerusalem. Small things become big things when we plan and move forward with God together. An amazing day starts with God, moves into working with God, and ends with a celebration of thankfulness to God. Let us encourage each other in Christ by creating a picture of endless possibilities. Let us pray and build confidence that all obstacles will be removed. Together, we will accomplish more than we could’ve ever dreamed.

Like during the time of Ezra, we face obstacles and we have to make adjustments in our plans. Being tough on ourselves and being led to the cross creates a better life. The Spirit gives the power to change by putting first things first and inspires the discipline to carry it out. Courage is needed to face the truth or say no to what is wrong and yes to what is right. It’s courageous to lead toward needed changes and to answer God’s call for doing what’s right.

For the next few weeks, the journey takes me into Nehemiah. There is a reading plan below. On the first day of each block of reading, the passage will be read using the question(s) to help in study and thought. Inspirational illustrations, sermon points, and pictures will be sought; anything that helps apply the passage to daily life at home or work. Quotes that inspire action or videos will also be searched. I will pray for my day ahead; for my family, church, community, and place of work. I will ask God for a plan of action after reading and studying each day’s reading.

On day two of each block of reading, the passage from the day before will be read again and checked by studying the heart. Thoughts, ideas, remarks, praises, or lessons learned that may help apply each passage will be sought after. Some thought will be put into what to pray for that day. It might be for what plan of action to take or to write a single thought that crystallizes the passage.

Nehemiah 1
Passage Lookup

With whom does God maintain his covenant and love? To what extent do you claim God’s promises when you pray for other Christians? What does Nehemiah pray specifically for himself?

Nehemiah 2
Passage Lookup

What do you pray when a decision must be made quickly? What is the first step of Nehemiah’s reconstruction project? Who is the author of the master plan (Read verse 12)? What is your heart to do for your people? For your city? For your neighborhood? For your place of work? For your campus? Why?

Nehemiah 3
Passage Lookup

Who begins the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s walls? To what extent are you willing to get involved in the work of the Lord? What contributes to the early success of the project?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’ve learned that spiritual growth is a daily process that requires continuous effort. Each day with God has fresh insight into how to play a part in His overall plan. He’s alive to help us now and into the future. Christ the difference maker assures that every struggle faced can be overcome.
Thanks for keeping me accountable to sharing my journey. Check up on my posts over the next week as I share some thoughts about each passage. My prayer is that some of the thoughts or ideas that come from the study and reflection can be applied to your own life.
