Boldly Step Ahead

In reading and studying Genesis 32 along my spiritual journey, I noted that Jacob took the initiative towards working things out with his brother Esau. He selected a significant number of cattle, sheep, goats, rams, camels, and donkeys as gifts for him.

As we boldly step ahead on our journey through life, let us take in this lesson of working our differences out. Instead, let us do God’s work together and eventually a flower will blossom for the world to see. This poem inspires us in that direction.

Mark Shields's avatarStep Ahead

Angels will help
Boldly step ahead.
On this spiritual journey
Being daily fed.

Learning new things
About God and self.
Refusing mediocrity;
Into the Word we delve.

Getting ready for the challenge
Of each and every day
By going to the ONE
Who created the Way!

Stirring each other up
To boldly step ahead.
Initiating spiritual growth
Being Bible Study led.

Reflecting on experiences
Along the journey of living.
God’s words like seeds
Take root in our giving.

Refuse to give up or stop,
Do God’s great endeavor,
And will blossom a flower
For the world to see forever.

Leadership Is Not A Popularity Contest

Written about in the post The Trial of Jesus, we get a lesson in leadership. Jesus demonstrates leadership with poise, courage, and strength. On the other hand, Pilot and Herod demonstrated poor leadership skills. They couldn’t make a decision because they lacked the courage to stand up and do what was right.

With God, we can be assured of a promising future and this gives us confidence to face our challenges with confidence. We know that He is faithful. He is like a mountain; standing rock solid over time and protecting us in our time of need. We can take courage, for God is there for us. Today’s inspirational video highlights these thoughts: Whom Shall I Fear – Chris Tomlin.

The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid? – Psalm 27:1

The Trial of Jesus

Continuing with the trial of Jesus, Luke 23:1-12 explains that the Jewish council brought Jesus before Pilate. Since Pilate was the Roman governor of Judea, the charge they brought before him was subverting the nation; opposing payment of taxes to Caesar along with claiming to be king. We know that the accusation about opposing payment of taxes is false from reading Luke 20:22-25 when Jesus said, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”

Pilate was a Roman governor and didn’t want to get involved in finding Jesus guilty because it would be risky for his political future. Also, he thought Jesus was innocent anyway so he didn’t immediately make a judgment. Instead, he sent Jesus to Herod who was the ruler of Galilee. Herod was the man who had murdered John the Baptist (vv. 6-7).

But Herod had heard many things about Jesus and was looking forward to meeting Him. The chief priests and scribes continued to accuse Jesus so like most politicians, Herod ended up torn between doing what was popular and doing what was right. He didn’t lead at all so rather than make a decision, he sent Jesus back to Pilate.

A leader has to know when to speak up and have the courage to make a stand and when to stay silent. Politicians seem to want to stay silent. Look at politicians today … they make decisions based on popularity rather than by leading and doing what is right.

But it is the same in any leadership role like leader of a group, an employee, or as a parent. There are times when Christians need to tell it like it is and stop trying to cover for those who are just wrong. It will come back and make us look like the one that’s wrong.

Father God, this day with You we pray for the ability to have good judgment about right and wrong and to have the courage to state what we believe is right. Not what is popular or what we think our boss wants to hear but what is accurate. Amen!

Questions for Reflection for Study of Luke 23-24

Shared over the last few weeks were some thoughts as I journey through Luke. Jesus explains how best to live out life but goes through opposition from the chief priests and teachers of the law. We all go through times in life when we face opposition and it is during these times that we must maintain our hope and have confidence that God will provide the words and wisdom to fight back with.

The lessons of Christ are more precious than gold so let us store them up. The Word never passes away so let us guard our hearts and minds and not get trapped in the negatives the world tries to trick us into. Let us apply our faith by accepting the help of the Holy Spirit to guide our steps.

Jesus taught about the servant type of leadership in which the Word of God is used as the weapon against the opposition. We face difficulties daily … a family member is sick, rough days at work, the extreme difficulty of balancing work with home duties or school work. When we face these difficult times, turn them over to God. When we do, that’s when greatness truly begins.

When Jesus faced the pressures of life, He yielded to God’s perfect will. As we go through the challenges of life, there are a few questions we must ask ourselves. Are we going to go through life like Judas who pretended to care for Jesus but really only cared about himself, like Peter who wanted to fight the enemy, or like Jesus who submitted to God’s purpose.

As we face these challenges, let us internalize God’s guiding principles. Some of us are trying to meet what may seem to be impossible deadlines at work, some of us are facing health difficulties or many other concerns that life brings our way. We pray today to remain positive, to plan out each step, and to take action with the strength only God can give.

Let us take in the Word over the next few weeks in order to share thoughts or ideas in how best to build up our faith. The studies are designed to help apply our faith in the work place, at school, or at home. You can keep up with my spiritual journey by clicking http://wp.me/1ar6D. As the journey through God’s Word continues, below are questions for reflection as we head into the home stretch of our study of the book of Luke.

Luke 23:1-12
Although the Jewish council want to put Jesus to death because He claims to be the Son of God (the charge-blasphemy), what charges do they bring before Pilate? What about the accusations is false? Account for the “politics” of Pilate after his statement of verse 4. In what ways do you try to avoid making decisions? Why? Does it work?

Luke 23:13-31
What about Jesus is repeatedly stressed in this passage? In what ways are your decisions a result of your convictions? In what ways are your decisions a result of popular opinion and demand?

Luke 23:32-43
As you visualize the scene and the characters, what are the attitudes of the people and soldiers toward Jesus? Contrast the attitudes revealed by the requests of the two criminals. What kinds of deliverance are they seeking? What kind of people do you usually regard as impenetrable to the gospel?

Luke 23:44-56
Describe the natural and religious phenomena that accompany Jesus’ death. What are the various reactions of the people to these events? What is the significance of Jesus’ death?

Luke 22:39-53
How does Jesus handle the pressure on Him? How do the disciples handle the pressure on them? What pressures to you face in your life? How do you handle them? When Judas led the officers of the temple guard and the elders to Jesus, What shows that Jesus submits voluntarily to the powers of darkness?

Luke 24:1-12
Who are the first to discover the fact that Jesus is raised from the dead? Are you discovering daily the life of Christ because you seek Him through acts of love? To what “proof” of Jesus’ resurrection do the angels refer (see vv. 6-7 with 9:22, 18:31-33)? Who can you tell that Jesus is alive today?

Luke 24:13-35
In reading this passage, what motive for Bible study does this give you? What factors contribute to the two disciples’ recognition of Jesus? What was the response from the two disciples when they recognized Jesus and what should be our response? What is your basic way of gaining knowledge of Christ?

Luke 24:36-53
What is the psychological state of the disciples when Jesus appears to them? With what kind of evidence of His resurrection is Jesus concerned? Are you asking God about His will for you in terms of making a difference in this world? How does the fact of the resurrection affect your daily living?

The above reading plan will be used as I share over the next few posts. It’s important to have a plan. I’m thankful that Jesus is God’s plan for us and by accepting Him as Savior; we have taken the steps necessary to make this day with Him amazing! At this link: God’s Plan for Us, is a post about accepting God’s plan or reaffirming our “YES” for Christ.

When we accept Christ as Savior, the Holy Spirit is our companion and it’s exciting to think about what the future holds. With God, we can get through anything, we can patiently grind it out during difficulties or give Him credit when the impossible is made possible. Beyond that, we can celebrate because of the victory we will always have with Him.

Feel free to respond with a short note or a comment about any of the questions above. Also, I welcome any other thoughts or ideas, favorite inspirational videos, photos, or favorite Bible verses. Just add them to the comments or to a Facebook page I’ve set up at this link: This Day With God.

Firm Foundation Of Truth

In the post More Precious Than Anything Life Has To Offer, written about was how Jesus handled the situation of being arrested and going through the trials before being crucified. Peter caved during the hostilities and sometimes in life, we may not handle the challenges we face like we should. One thing we can be sure of is that Christ is reliable and He has promised that if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins.

We live in a world of shifting sand but with Christ, we have a firm foundation. This day, there is freedom with Christ. A freedom that helps us live, give, and love. A freedom that will speak and teach; laying out a solid path that we can follow and show others how to follow. The inspirational video for to today is Solid As The Rock by Avalon. Enjoy!

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make Him out to be a liar and His word is not in us. – 1 John 1:9
