Celebrate When the Lost are Found

Crowds were drawn to Jesus to hear Him teach but the Pharisees were criticizing Jesus as recorded in Luke 15 because He reached out to sinners and tax collectors. Jesus then uses three parables to address their concerns. The unifying theme of the parables is to celebrate when the lost are found. Jesus tells them that there is more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who do not need to repent (v. 7).

The first is the Parable of the Lost Sheep. A shepherd leaves ninety-nine sheep to look for the lost one and when found, there is so much joy that friends and neighbors are called together to celebrate.

The second is the Parable of The Lost Coin. A woman loses a coin at her home and searches carefully until she finds it. When she finally finds it, again there is a celebration with friends and neighbors.

The third is the Parable of the Lost Son. The youngest son of a wealthy man couldn’t wait for his part of the inheritance and demands to receive his part immediately. The son makes unwise choices and squanders the entire inheritance in reckless living. He finally comes to his senses and returns home thinking he would work for his father but when his father sees him coming home, he starts planning a feast to celebrate.

This day with God, let’s see value in everyone and search for the lost to bring them home. Lord, we pray for the right attitude in our heart; that we see value in all people and want to help all to accept Your Son as Savior. When this happens Lord, we look forward to rejoicing and celebrating the victory.

Connection for Direction

In reading and studying Genesis 24 a while back, Abraham gave his servant a mission; to find a wife for his son Isaac. The servant had faith that God would make his mission a success. He prays that certain things would happen and when they did, he was confident that the will of God had been carried out.

This day with God, let us humbly admit that we may be lacking in some areas of life but at the same time let us be confident in His power to lead us to great achievements. May you be blessed by this poem!

Mark Shields's avatarStep Ahead

Praying before going;
Looking for a sign;
Waiting to proceed
At the right time.

There is confidence
A sign will be given
To carry out a mission;
To be divinely driven.

The power of prayer;
Receiving Divine help;
Setting out for success;
Taking the first step.

Faith in God
To make it happen
And exhibiting trust
By taking action.

Seal the Deal by Obeying His Way

There is a cost to being a Disciple as I explained in the post Being Disciplined to Follow. The key is to determine if you’re willing to pay the price. Remember, there is freedom in obeying God’s way because He cares for us and understands our needs.

Stay focused on the ultimate victory. Taking action will seal the deal by using the high quality principles of faith, hope, and love.  Ultimately, our life will be lost unless we surrender all to Jesus which brings the ultimate victory of eternal life. Here’s a video that highlights this plan God has for us: I Surrender All – Oslo Gospel Choir.

But He knows the way that I take; when He has tested me, I will come forth as gold. – Job 23:10

Being Disciplined to Follow

Jesus teaches in Luke 14:25-35 how difficult it is to follow Him. Many may say they want to follow but do not consider the demands; giving up family life, giving up everything, the demands of daily carrying the cross, and being able to forget old ways of thinking for new ones. Jesus is explaining that being a disciple has a cost because nothing is more important than doing the Lord’s work.

There are several parables Jesus uses to explain the cost of being a disciple; being willing to follow anywhere, at any time, and at any price. The first parable is about someone building a large tower. Jesus tells them that before someone would start an endeavor like this, they would consider the cost so they could pay for it. The reason Jesus explains is that if they started but didn’t finish, they would be laughed at.

The second parable used was comparing discipleship to a king preparing to fight a war. Jesus tells them that the king would consider his chances for victory before he started because if he felt he might lose, he might negotiate a peace settlement. Relating this to life, we know that ultimately our life will be lost unless we surrender all to Jesus which brings ultimate victory in eternal life.

The third parable used by Jesus is comparing salt with our spiritual life. One must not be contaminated with the world view and lose Christian character but remain of high quality. We must not just talk the talk but we need to walk the walk. It’s all about hearing what to do and then applying this instruction in everything we do as we step ahead.

Invite Everyone to Feast in His Kingdom

Several lessons are taught in Luke 14:1-24 of which I wrote some thoughts in the post Being Inclusive. One of these lessons is that we should include everyone to feast in the kingdom of God. Some will let us down and not come but others will surprise us and come. Here’s an inspirational video that also expresses this thought: Jesus Friend of Sinners – Casting Crowns.

Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. – Romans 15:7
