Start with Prayer

In the post Following Instructions for a Successful Day, written about was how Abraham was concerned who his son Isaac would marry so he sends someone to find the perfect mate for his son. Abraham didn’t want him to marry someone where they currently lived because the people didn’t know the One True God and worshiped idols.

The servant of Abraham shows his faith in God and prays for certain things to happen as he finds a wife for his master’s son. He found Rebekah as a wife for Isaac.

All parents hope their children choose the right mate. Prayer is so important in raising children and it’s so important in anything we do. Here is a video poem to inspire our prayers today: Blessings Throughout Each Hour.

Train a child in the way they should go, and when they are old they will not turn from it. – Proverbs 22:6

Following Instructions for a Successful Day

Abraham was up in age and gave his helper instructions on finding a wife for his son Isaac. As detailed in Genesis 24, the helper went to the town of Nahor. He prayed, “Lord, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today, and show kindness to my master Abraham (v. 12).

The helper has faith that God will make his mission a success. He prays that certain things will happen and he shows his faith by taking action. He prayed that God would give a sign when the right young woman for Isaac is in his presence.

The sign was that when he goes down by the spring to get water, a young woman will give him a drink and offer to give water to his camels too. When this happens, he is confident that the will of God has been carried out and knows this is the young woman for Isaac.

This day with God, Let us realize that prayer is our greatest power because we are speaking to the ONE who has the answer. Just like the servant of Abraham who was given the task of finding a young woman as a wife for Isaac, we can pray for success and ask for a sign from God to help us know that we are receiving His guidance and that we can immediately put it into practice for a successful day.

Humility – All Great Leaders Possess It

In the post the Humility of Abraham, I wrote that Abraham demonstrated humility that aroused a response of respect as he searched for a burial site for his wife Sarah.

We all live on this earth for a short time but we can be comforted by the fact that we have eternal life because Jesus died on the cross for us.

Studying the life of Jesus, we find that He also possessed humility as depicted in this short inspirational movie: One Solitary Life.

The Humility of Abraham

As recorded in Genesis 23, Sarah died at the age of 127. Abraham needed a place to bury Sarah but he had never owned a piece of land in his life. He humbly and pleasantly asked if he could purchase some land as a burial site for his wife.

Ephron the Hittite offered to give him some land for her burial but Abraham insisted that he purchase the piece of property.

An attribute of Abraham that we should all imitate is his humility. He wanted to pay for the burial site for Sarah rather than receive it as a gift. This aroused a response of respect and shows us a humble independence that any leader should imitate.

There is a difference between being humble and having an “inferiority complex”. Being humble is realizing that God has given certain talents and skills to each of us; understanding that we all need help in life but at the same time realizing that God can use our talents.

We should connect the power of God to people by respecting them, being interested in them, and trusting in their abilities. This day with God, let your light shine with humility; giving God the credit and looking at others as His child.

Carry Out Your Purpose

This day with God, let us respond to His incredible instructions with purpose and resolve just like Noah did. .. One day at a time.

Mark Shields's avatarStep Ahead

Noah did the job
The Lord told him to do
Then went into the ark
With his family inside too

For forty days and nights
The rain came down
But the ark floated
So they did not drown

The waters flooded the earth
For a hundred and fifty days
God gave Noah a purpose
He did it without any delays

What purpose has He given you?
It begins with prayer
Listen and reflect
Breathe in the fresh air

Use the Internet to change
The world for the better
To encourage each other
And help your neighbor

Work together with thoughts
With ideas to pass along
Glorify God one day at a time
Just like this song
