Delivered from Enemies

The Lord delivered David from his enemies and from the hand of Saul. In Psalm 18:1-24, David spreads his wings in faith to be lifted from his distress by praying for deliverance. As a deliverer, God takes action and we get a vivid description from David in this Psalm of how God responds prayer.

God rewarded David because of his righteousness (v. 20 and v. 24). We can be thankful because we gain righteousness by accepting Christ. When our enemies of life pressure us from all angles, we can go to God in prayer just like David did and ask for Him to work things out. His provision sets up a way to escape or the power to get through any situation.

Things may happen that should not but we can overcome difficulty. People may do us wrong and we may lose trust but we can be an overcomer if we forgive, step ahead, and are thankful for what we do have.

We can react with strength because with the study of scripture, we are provided light in our darkest hour. Our enemies will sense this power and they will not be bold enough to challenge us or expose any of our weaknesses. Even if there is a challenging situation, we can go to God for more instruction and direction. The scripture can be used as our weapon to handle stressful situations. We can start fresh with a new perspective.

This day with You Lord will be amazing because all the challenges we face can be met head on. We have confidence that You will provide the resources needed to get through anything. Whatever we go through this day, we are not stressed out because like You did with Dave, You have fashioned a bright future. Our hope is in the righteousness we receive by accepting Your love in Christ. Amen.

Shadow of Your Wings

Keep me as the apple of your eye;
hide me in the shadow of your wings
from the wicked who are out to destroy me,
from my mortal enemies who surround me. –Psalm 17:8-9

As shared in the post “First Down”, David prays that God would help him in a distressful situation. Life had blocked David from gaining momentum just as life blocks our path at times.

The lesson for us is to remain optimistic because with God, we are highly favored. We can overcome our enemies in life by taking in God’s Word to fortify. Sometimes the greatest enemy we face is within our own mind. We may say stuff in our own mind like “It’s too difficult … I can’t do this”.

I heard a story one time about a field goal kicker in football who said he recites scripture in his mind when in a pressure situation like kicking the game winning field goal. A scripture like Philippians 4:13 “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength” and other memorized scriptures can be very useful when faced with pressure moments in life.

Lord, we pray today that you will protect us. That we will take in Your scripture to fortify us and prepare us for the challenges of life. The devil tries to break us in life but You never forsake us. We are thankful for songs like Savior’s Shadow by Blake Shelton because we gain confidence and inspiration to follow the Way. This day, fill our minds with thoughts like this one from the song: “Grace leads us to where we are free”. In Jesus name. Amen.

First Down

In Psalm 17, David is praying for the ability to know the right way, to plan out the path to follow, and set out in the right direction. He calls on God to listen to his prayer, continue to love him, and protect him from his enemies.

David describes the goals of his enemies as consisting of short term gains; desiring worldly ambitions like prosperity and superiority. In this prayer, David is asking that he be rewarded with God’s continual presence. Unlike his enemies, David believed that a relationship with God should be the ultimate aim and reward in life.

In this passage, we learn that David came up against a tough defense and could not gain any first downs in life. We can take this and other lessons to better see what’s keeping us from gaining first downs or blocking our way. We can be better prepared by focusing on God’s plan. If we do, God will provide the open path and all we have to do is follow the way and we will not only gain first downs but make touchdowns in life.

The Week Ahead

This week, we will be sharing some thoughts from the study of Psalm 17 and 18.

Below are some questions for reflection:

Psalm 17
What does David pray for? What are the contrasting goals of himself and his enemies? What can a person do to keep the worldly goals of prosperity and pride from creeping into your life?

Psalm 18:1-24
What is David’s trial (See 2 Samuel 22:1-51)? As a deliverer, how does God take action? What can be done when life puts pressure on us from all angles? How can we gain the righteousness needed in order to be rewarded by God?

Believe that God has a great plan for you.

It all starts with receiving a plan from God through faithful, consistent, and powerful prayer. Here is a video/poem to inspire you this day and throughout the week: This Day with God.

The Things of God

Here is a poem which inspires toward the keys to successfully realizing your God given purpose. Have a wonderful weekend as you fulfill your purpose my friends!

Mark Shields's avatarStep Ahead

Many times the things
We think look good
End up not so good
And such a falsehood.
Then things we don’t
Think will be good
End up being good
When truly understood.

If the things of God
Are what is cherished
Then we have all
As the soul is nourished.
Reading daily His Word,
Our prayer request,
And planning towards
Being at our best.

Over the course of life
All the great things
Don’t magically happen
But spring from our King.
Our ongoing commitment
To build momentum
For life and beyond
As we are devoted to Him.
