Refreshment for the Body and Soul

This day with God will be amazing because as we read Numbers 20  and use the questions for reflection, we will receive wisdom that will help in applying our faith. We will acquire inspiration to help in times of worry or anger. We will reminisce about good times or an old song to fill our thoughts with peace and joy.

Today, I’m reminiscing about a trip to England I took with a group from college in 1983. The photo below was taken on a Friday afternoon in Bath England as people started the weekend. We all need some time to refresh the body and soul; to relax, recharge, and get ready for the journey ahead.

The first item of reflection from today’s passage is how the Israelites complained again about being in a terrible place. There was no grain or figs, grapevines or pomegranates. And no water to drink! The people were thirsty after being led through the wilderness by Mosses, they complained and Mosses ask God for help. God told him to speak to a rock with all the people gathered together and it will pour out water.

Moses thought he needed the people to respect him as leader so instead of giving God the glory, he struck the rock as though he had all the power and water gushed out.  Instead of giving credit to God for this miracle, Moses and Aaron took credit; neglecting to mention that God had anything to do with this miracle.

Because of their disobedience, they would continue to face hardship. Edom would deny passage through the edge of their territory so they continued to digress on their journey. Later in the passage, the death of Aaron is recorded.

One take away from today’s reading is the need to overcome failure by surrendering all to God and letting Him take control. Instead of turning to our own abilities or to the world for help, we need to turn to God and honor Him when He pulls us out of tough circumstances.

One story I’m reminded of today is the story of Mike Lindell who had failed over and over in business. He’s the “MyPillow” guy you see on commercials. He failed in several small businesses, failed in his 20 year marriage, lost his house, and almost his MyPillow business earlier in life because of an addiction to cocaine and alcohol. He got back on track with prayer in 2009 and surrendering his life to Christ. Since then, the MyPillow business has grown into a major company with 1,600 employees and millions of pillows sold.

This day with You Lord, we give You control. We surrender all and know that Your power is greater than our own abilities or any help from this world. We have a leader and You and we give You all the credit. We have physical and spiritual needs and we trust You will provide. You know what will benefit us more than we do. The grace You have given provides us with a clean slate so we have peace knowing that You are in control now and forever. Amen.

Questions for Reflection for Study of Numbers 20-25

Over the last few weeks, we’ve shared some thoughts and ideas from the journey through the book of Numbers.

The take away as explained in the post “Trust in Divine Power” is to trust God always. Failing to trust God brings on a greater problem than the original problem.

The thought explained in the post “Keep Focusing on the Destination” is to obey God’s Word and submit to the authority of this Word along with the authority of God’s appointed leaders in government, in the work place, or within a family.

In the post “Focused on the Purpose”, the take away was the need to get everyone pulling in the same direction. Moses had his dissenters as Korah, Dathan, and Abiram along with 250 Israelite leaders rose up to oppose. With courage, we can stand up and be a transformer rather than a conformer.

The encouragement found in “Step Ahead on Solid Ground” is for us to take in God’s Word, receive the indwelling Holy Spirit, and accept the risen Christ who is our interceding Savior in heaven. While we patiently wait for his return, let us keep working hard and give an honest day’s work, give praise with a good attitude, and be optimistic.

The post “Our Responsibility for Kingdom Building” points out the various responsibilities surrounding the tent of meeting. In current times, the Lord doesn’t dwell in the tent of meeting but inside each of us by the Holy Spirit.

We are bound by a common purpose and will stay together along this journey. We will continue to find ways to apply God’s Word in our life by taking in the lessons from posts like “Along the Way with Power to Fulfill our Purpose”. The mission is adventurous and sometimes difficult but it can change the world and we can take comfort in knowing God is with us.

The reading plan below will be used to hold me accountable in sharing about God’s word over the next few weeks. As I share about my study, it’s important to have a plan. I’m thankful that Jesus is God’s plan for us and by accepting Christ as Savior; we have taken the steps necessary to make this day with God amazing!

Questions for Reflection

Numbers 20
What do the Israelites complain about this time? What incurs God’s judgment on Moses and Aaron? What do you learn from this chapter about God’s attitude toward disobedience?

Numbers 21
What enemies are encountered in this chapter? What happens to each? What ways does God act on behalf of the Israelites here?

Numbers 22
Why does Balak send for Balaam? Where does Balaam go wrong? To what extent do you listen to God day by day?

Numbers 23
Imagine Balaam’s feelings as he returns from the barren height? How much encouragement does Balaam give to Balak? To what extent are you consistently truthful even though your statements are opposed to what others want to hear?

Numbers 24
What seems to close the case and make Balaam come right out and bless Israel? What is the future for the nations against Israel?

Numbers 25
Why is the Lord’s anger so greatly kindled? How does God deal with Israel’s sin? What does God’s response to Phinehas reveal about God’s justice?

Feel free to respond with a short note or a comment about any of the questions above. Also, I welcome any other thoughts or ideas, favorite inspirational videos, photos, or favorite Bible verses. Just add them to the comments or to a Facebook page I’ve set up at this link: This Day With God.

Reason to Keep on Believing

God sent His Son to make things right for us so we can receive the power to fulfill our purpose which is to make more disciples. It’s a mission that is adventurous and sometimes difficult but it can change the world for the better and we can take comfort in knowing God is with us.

I can do all things through Him who gives me strength. – Philippians 4:13

This day with God will be amazing because we are bound by a common purpose and will stay together along this journey. Today, we continue to find ways to apply God’s Word in our life by taking in the lessons from recent posts like “Along the Way with Power to Fulfill our Purpose”. The mission is adventurous and sometimes difficult but it can change the world and we can take comfort in knowing God is with us.

God made a way for life to work more efficient so we can spend our time on things that are most important. Like the song Reason by Unspoken points out, when things get tough and we feel like giving up, His love is the reason to keep on believing. We have the common purpose of making…

Enthusiasm Today

This Cinquain style poem was inspired by Stonehenge. I took this photo in 1983 when I went with a group for three weeks to London England and the surrounding area. Cinquain is a style of Poetry with five lines. Line 1 is the title. Line 2 has two words that describe the title. Line 3 has three words that tell the action. Line 4 has four words that express the feeling, and line 5 recalls the title.

Ancient Stonehenge

Did Stonehenge serve as an astronomical calendar for the solstice? Each day has in store new discoveries, new mysteries to explore, and more knowledge to gain. Be enthusiastic and this will be transmittable so that others develop the value of discovery, thought, and creativity.

Ability and Responsibility

Be someone who can do amazing things with ease by discovering the strengths God has given you. Then accept your responsibility knowing that God will do the rest.

Mark Shields's avatarThis Day With God - A Spiritual Journey

And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. – 1 Corinthians 12:28

The post “Our Responsibility for Kingdom Building” points out the various responsibilities surrounding the tent of meeting. In current times, the Lord doesn’t dwell in the tent of meeting but inside each of us by the Holy Spirit. Therefore, we should take care of our bodies, determine our ability, and fulfill our responsibility in God’s Plan for Us.

This day with God will be amazing because God thinks you are AWESOME! Focus on what you can do and not on what you wish you could do. Then what seemed to be impossible will become possible.

As the song You Say…
