Jesus studied, listened, reflected and gave us the Way to follow. That’s what Jesus did and we should do the same. He is the example and we should also desire to be an example for others.

The poem at this link emphasizes the benefits of learning from the past, praying in the present, and listening for instructions toward the future.

Faith Fruitfulness

By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? – Matthew 7:16

Some collect the knowledge from God’s word and look good on the outside but fail to produce any fruit. Not only is there a need to learn but a need to connect to others and share about God’s Plan for Us.

In the post “Faith Nutrients”, we are told of a fig tree that Jesus curses and then He clears the Temple courts. The lesson for us is that looking good on the outside is not as important as producing fruit to benefit others.

For more faith to make you fruitful, gain inspiration from the song Confidence by Sanctus Real.

Faith Nutrients

Some have knowledge about faith and look good on the outside but fail to produce any fruit. Not only is there a need to learn but a need to connect to others and share about God’s Plan. Reading today in Mark 11:12-25, let us not only absorbed the nutrients from the word to grow in faith but also produce fruit so we provide food for the soul for others.

Jesus and the disciples were on their way from Bethany to Jerusalem when they stopped along the way to rest. Jesus noticed a fig tree full of green leaves so he went over to get some figs to eat. It was displaying leaves so it was presenting itself as producing fruit but did not so Jesus perpetuated the state in which he finds the fig tree by pronouncing judgment on it.

When they entered the temple courts in Jerusalem, there was buying and selling going on in the temple area. The temple leaders were involved in monetary benefits from this buying and selling as they took advantage of the people who came to worship. They presented themselves as having something good or fruit to benefit the people but instead created a burden on them.

There was a significant temple tax of about two day’s wages per year for a working person. There was also a 15% fee which was collected by the money changes for the currency exchange that existed at that time between Greek and Roman money. On top of that, the people were charged for doves used in sacrifice. If they bought doves someplace else, the inspectors rejected them because the doves had to be without blemish. The temple leaders would then sell their doves to them and charged 20 times more than normal.

Jesus was furious when entering the temple courts so He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves (v. 15). Instead of a “house of prayer”, the temple was described by Jesus as a “den of robbers” (v. 17). The priests and scribes were jealous of Jesus and they feared Him because the people were amazed at His teaching so they began looking for a way to kill him.

On the way back to Bethany, they took the same path they had come and saw the fig tree withered from the root (v. 20).

Jesus uses the fig tree to illustrate prayer. Faith in God should make us fruitful in good works. When we pray, we should believe that we have already received it because faith gives us the strength to endure, the patience to wait, and the energy to withstand the struggle.

Lord we pray for our faith to provide the nutrients we need so we produce spiritual fruit for not only ourselves but for the soul of others. Help us to not only have knowledge of faith but to put our faith into practice. To take in the principles taught by Christ and to apply our faith for Your purposes. Amen.

Courage to Face the Challenges

Do not be terrified, or afraid of them. The Lord your God, who goes before you, He will fight for you. – Deuteronomy 1:29

A take away from the post “Preparing For Action” is to spend time with God in prayer and planning so instructions are given to take on the challenges ahead. Let us write down these plans of action and get started in our walk of faith today.

God is in control so take courage in the fight as we step ahead with boldness because as the song Battle is the Lord’s by Rebecca St. James ft. Brandon Lake points out, we can have confidence because God is by our side and everything will turn out alright.

Preparing For Action

Today we are reading the record documented in Mark 11:1-11 of Jesus and the twelve disciples entering Jerusalem for the Jewish feast of Passover. Jesus and the disciples reach Bethany and Jesus tells two disciples to go into the village ahead.

Jesus told them they would see a colt outside in the street tied to a doorway. The instructions were to untie the colt and bring it back to their location in Bethany. The two disciples did as Jesus told them to do. They must have been concerned that they would be caught stealing the colt but they acted in faith and their fears subsided.

Bethany is two miles east of Jerusalem so Jesus rode the colt on Palm Sunday into Jerusalem. It took a lot of courage for Jesus to come into Jerusalem knowing about the sufferings he would endure over the next week.

When Jesus got to Jerusalem, he went to the temple courts to look around to prepare for the week ahead. He knew what he had to endure leading up to and during the crucifixion. After His time of preparation, it was getting late so He went back to Bethany at the Mount of Olives to be with the twelve disciples.

This day with God, let us prepare to take action. Let us spend time planning to gain spiritual assets rather than the accumulation of material assets. Let us rely on the instructions given in the word of God as our guide, write down the plans of action, and take courage as we step ahead with boldness knowing that God is by our side.

This day with You Lord, we pray for the type of courage that Jesus displayed the week leading up to crucifixion. This type of courage enables us to turn what is ordinary into something extraordinary. There is peace in Your presence because we give You full control, the battle is in Your hands, and we will courageously step ahead to face this day with confidence.
