The Importance of Honesty and Doing What We Say

Judah was one of the brothers of Joseph who sold Joseph to the caravan of Midianites on their way to Egypt. In Genesis 38, we learn more about Judah and a lesson in the importance of doing what we say we will do and being honest.

In today’s passage, we read that Judah married a Canaanite woman and had three sons, Er, Onan, and Shelah. Judah had gotten a wife named Tamar for his first son named Er but Er was wicked in the Lord’s sight so the Lord put him to death (v. 7).

Then in accordance with a custom known as levirate marriage where the brother of a deceased man is obliged to marry his brother’s widow, Judah told Onan to marry and produce offspring with Tamar. Onan knew that the offspring would not be his so to keep from having offspring with his brother’s wife, he made sure his semen was spilled on the ground (v. 9). The Lord put him to death also (v. 10).

Judah then told Tamar to live with her father for a while until his youngest son Shelah grew up and he would give him to Tamar but he never followed through with what he said. After the years had passed and Judah lost his wife, he went to Timnah to check on the men who were shearing his sheep (v. 12). Tamar who was the daughter-in-law of Judah sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah (v. 14). She posed as a temple prostitute, covering her face in a veil, and deceived her father-in-law.

After several months, Judah was told that Tamar was guilty of prostitution. Judah wanted her brought out and burned to death but right before she was brought out, she sent a message to her father-in-law that she was pregnant and it was his child she was carrying. Judah then realized that Tamar was the prostitute he had been with. He also felt guilt for not doing what he had promised in giving Tamar to his son Shelah (v. 26).

So Tamar was allowed to live and give birth to Judah’s twin sons who would carry the line of Judah. The amazing part of this account is that the births created a situation similar to Jacob and Esau in the previous generation; the older son serving the younger son. For when they were born, it looked like one would be born first but then one of the twins was born breach and actually was born first so there was confusion as to which one was born first.

So the deception runs in the family line going back to Jacob and Esau and deception always leads down the road of hardship. Jacob deceived his father in getting His blessing and now we see Tamar deceiving Judah in becoming the mother of his twin sons.

Things in this world are sometimes built like a house of cards but one thing we can count on in the storms of life are the promises of God. These promises are built on truth and we can rest assured that they will be fulfilled.

Thank you Lord that You give us a clear path for us to follow. This day, we pray for honesty in how we live our life. We pray for helping others to see the clear path by living the way we should and being a good role model. In your road map called the Bible, we get a clear picture of the importance of being honest and doing what we say. We are thankful for the role model You give us in your Son. Living the way Jesus teaches leads to meaningful places and makes a positive impact on lives.  In Jesus Name, Amen!

Words are Powerful

In a few thoughts expressed after reading Genesis 37 and writing in the post Treating Others with Kindness and Tact, I wrote that Joseph did not show tactfulness to his brothers. He had a dream and told his brothers in a boastful way about how he would rule over them. This caused a situation that damaged the whole family.

The words we use are powerful. Here are a few more thoughts about the words we use:

  • Using the wrong words can cause a business to lose customers
  • Using the wrong words can get someone fired
  • Be gentle in what we say and how we say it
  • Words direct our life
  • Think about how even a small child can direct a powerful horse with just a few words
  • Use words that help and encourage

This day with God, let us understand the power of words. They can fill us up or break us down so let our words encourage, inspire, bring about positive actions, and be of truth. Here is today’s video called Words by Hawk Nelson.

Be careful! Our words can hurt or help. “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up”. – Ephesians 4:29

Treating Others with Kindness and Tact

When Joseph told his brothers about a dream as recorded in Genesis 37, they became angry because it portrayed Joseph as ruler over them. Rather than keep the dream to himself or communicate its meaning empathetically, he thoughtlessly bragged how God would bless him more than his brothers.

Jacob aggravated the whole situation by showing favoritism to Joseph. He had been born in Jacob’s old age and Jacob had made a beautiful robe for Joseph. This made Joseph’s brothers jealous and they reacted with outrage because they knew Joseph was the favorite child.

They were also mad at Joseph because he had given their father a bad report about how they tended the flocks. When Jacob told Joseph to check up on his brothers, they took their anger to a different level. They first threw him into a cistern and then sold him to a caravan of Midianites on their way to Egypt (v. 25).

Rather than tell their father what had truly taken place, Jacob’s sons made up a story that a ferocious animal had devoured Jacob. They took his robe, which they had covered with blood as evidence back to their father. When he saw the evidence, Jacob mourned his loss for many days (v. 34). In the meantime, the Midianites sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard (v. 36).

We all have a responsibility for how we react to the bad things others cause in our lives. Ask for God’s help in treating others with kindness and tact. Be inspired by the Creator of the universe; an expansive universe with over 100 billion galaxies with each galaxy having billions of stars. Understand that it is the Creation of people that is His greatest creation of all. See great potential in His people and ask that your words and your thoughts are pleasing.

Questions for Reflection for Study of Genesis 37-40

Over the last few weeks, I’ve studied about the reunion of Esau and Jacob and how this was a lesson on handling conflict. We face conflict every day. Maybe it is the driver who is in a hurry and cuts you off trying to get advantage in traffic. Maybe it is the fellow employee who is aggressively trying to beat you out of the promotion. Maybe it is a spouse who left this morning in anger after a disagreement.

It takes humility and kindness to resolve conflict. We all face situations at work or home in which our impulse is to react with anger but it is always best to let God have input into the best course of action. He helps plan the right things for our day and our days run much smoother when we go to Him for direction.

Jacob was influenced by others who were going down the wrong path. He went through years of struggle; working for his father-in-law who was not a believer and forcing Jacob to work as a servant for seven years before he could marry his daughter. Then being tricked by his father-in-law who gave a different daughter to him in marriage. Jacob gained wealth through God’s providence but this wealth made his brother-in-laws jealous.

Then things changed for Jacob when he was directed by God to go down the right path. In our lives today, the same can happen for us. Remember, God’s promises will be fulfilled because our Father can make the impossible possible. The world wants to tell us that God is not real but the ONE who created it all can change and restore a life through Christ; changing anybody, anytime, and anywhere.

A disciplined life with attitudes or actions that honor and praise God leads to a bright future so pray for discipline in obeying His way because He cares about our future even more than we do. He understands our needs but it is up to us to have the discipline to follow His way so that our needs are met.

The actions of today can have long-term, far-reaching implications in our living for the future. Regular Bible study and application of our faith do effect our future in a positive way. The mission of this blog is to bring out ways to apply God’s Word in our life at work, at home, and within our neighborhoods. The below questions for reflection for the upcoming study are laid out below to help bring out some thoughts and ideas over the next two weeks.

Genesis 37
How is Joseph tactless in his relations with people? What are the problems of Jacob’s other sons? To what extent are you responsible for the effect in your life of other people’s sins against you? In what ways is Jacob at fault in the whole situation?

Genesis 38
What kind of man was Judah? What kind of person is usually severest in his treatment of a sinner? How is Tamar more righteous than Judah?

Genesis 39
What kind of man is Joseph becoming? In what areas of his life is God with him? What do you do when you are wrongly accused of something? The Lord was with Joseph so that there was success in everything he was in charge of. How can we do likewise?

Genesis 40
How does Joseph make use of his circumstances? How does Joseph act towards those who do not know God? How is Joseph an example for us today?

The above reading plan will be used as I share over the next few posts. It’s important to have a plan. I’m thankful that Jesus is God’s plan for us and by accepting Him as Savior; we have taken the steps necessary to make this day with Him amazing! At this link: God’s Plan for Us, is a post about accepting God’s plan or reaffirming our “YES” for Christ.

Feel free to respond with a short note or a comment about any of the questions above. Also, I welcome any other thoughts or ideas, favorite inspirational videos, photos, or favorite Bible verses. Just add them to the comments or to a Facebook page I’ve set up at this link: This Day With God.
