Reward for the Soul

The vision of summer fruit presented in Amos 8 illustrates that the people were ripe for judgment. As the fruit sits in the sun on a summer day, it will soon spoil so the message in this passage is that the patience of the Lord has run its course and it was time for God’s judgment.

The rich and powerful had oppressed the poor and continued to worship idols. Because they had not listened to the warnings, the Lord would send famine which would lead to disease and death throughout the land.

Just like in the days of Amos, many look for answers to life’s big problems. Unfortunately they look for solutions in the wrong places. That’s why we should each do all we can to understand the Word of God and to help others do the same.

God’s Word provides the answers to our questions and is our daily food to nourish our life. When I come home for work, my dog is happy to see me. After a time of greeting and play, she is ready for her afternoon meal. Then early in the morning, my dog is ready to get up early because feeding time is near. In the same way, we should be eager to take in the food for our souls; rising early to receive our daily reward.

By taking in God’s Word as food for our soul, we will be blessed and others will be blessed because of our sharing about the treasures we find. This day with You Lord, we bring our hearts and seek You first before anything else. Your word is rewarding to our souls and we are enthusiastic about our day because we have come to You first. You are our true reward. Amen.

The courage to Start

Many times, all it take is the courage to start and then something amazing happens. Have a wonderful weekend my friends!

Mark Shields's avatarStep Ahead

Start something positive
Even if it’s very small
And over time you will build
Something great for all.

So start to sail away today
Away from the safe place
Using the winds of the Spirit
To help you win the race.

Plant a flower in a field
Each day like it’s your duty
Until one day the field
Is covered in amazing beauty.

Twenty years from now
You will be more hurt
By the lack of effort given
Than the one you did exert.

Explore neat new places,
Discover brand new ways,
Dream about the future,
And the new trails to blaze.

Experts Can Have Many Misses

Teach me, and I will be quiet; show me where I have been wrong. – Job 6:24

We can’t be assured of the proper guidance from experts or by using apps or maps. Experts can have many misses as they tell us what is best for us in our life. That’s why the greatest learning in life comes from God’s Word and by following His Way.

That’s not to say that we can’t learn from others but many times, the whizzes in certain fields tend to have an agenda. Keep in mind that those who have our best interest in mind are the ones to follow; people like our parents and grandparents.

One time, my daughter stayed with her cousins in my hometown about 60 miles east of where we currently live. I was going over to pick her up but on the way over, I ran into a downpour.  It was so much rain that a part of the highway that goes under a railroad track was flooded. Being from that town, I remembered my dad and grandfather taking another route nearby that went over the tracks instead of under the tracks and then back onto the highway. I took the route and noticed behind me about five other vehicles following me.

No map or app showed the way but experience and following what I had learned growing up got us to where we needed to go. It is much the same in a life with Christ. The experiences we go through and learning how Jesus lived as recorded in the Gospels will lead us to where we need to go.

Some days seem like a fight. We have doubt and we have things that happen that brings us to our knees. It is during these times that we need to go to the ONE who knows. The experts in various fields may have a personal agenda but God has our best interest in mind so lift up your eyes to Him today and receive inspiration from today’s video: He Knows – Jeremy Camp.

Square with God’s Way

Reading in Amos 7, there are three visions given to Amos in order to warn God’s people of impending judgment. The first vision is the Lord preparing swarms of locusts that would destroy their crops. Then there was a vision of the Lord’s judgment by fire and the land drying up. The third vision was the Lord standing near a wall with a plumb line in His hand. A plumb line is use by carpenters to make sure the walls are lined up and square so this vision explained that Israel’s conduct did not “square” with God’s way.

Even though Amos had compassion and pleaded with God to not bring down His judgment upon the people, his warnings were not accepted by the priest named Amaziah who went against Amos. He even sent a message to the king of Israel named Jeroboam that Amos was raising a conspiracy against the king and the nation of Israel (v. 10). Amaziah told Amos to leave the country and go back to Judah.

As we go through life, it’s not always clear who we should listen to. So many people call themselves experts in certain fields but many times they seem to be wrong. The thing to keep in mind is that God has your best interest in mind. Many times, the expert telling us what to do has a personal agenda and does not have our best interest in mind.

I submit that God has our best interest and the way to evaluate our life is to use a tool. It’s like a “plumb line” so that we are “square” with God’s way. This tool to use is His Word with its principles and commands.

Lord, we are thankful for your Word that keeps us square with your Way. By following Your Word, our days are amazing but without You and and Your word, our life is a mess. There is a beautiful and refreshing simplicity from the Gospel message that sets us free and never lets us down. Lord, our growing faith will never be taken away or depleted and our hope for the future is bright because we are square with Your Way. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

There is a Process that does Bless

Let us, then, feel very sure that we can come before God’s throne where there is grace. There we can receive mercy and grace to help us when we need it.Hebrews 4:16

Many times throughout the history of mankind, nations have gone astray. Such is the case as written about in the post “Actions to Take Now for the Good Life”. Amos was telling the people that there is a process that does bless God’s people; a way to change course away from their sins which included the oppression of the innocent, taking bribes, depriving the poor of justice, and idol worship to mention just a few.

Here we are in current times and the warning from Amos continues to apply in the present. Many nations throughout the world do not seek the Lord first. Even the United States of America in which the motto is “One Nation Under God” has lost their way as leaders no longer put an emphasis on integrity and upholding justice.

Albert Einstein once said “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning”.  We must continue to question: What does God want in the lives of His people? How can each individual take action now to seek what God has for them?

Learning is a life-long process so let us take every opportunity to ask questions, seek answers, and share with others. God wants His people to seek every good thing and glorify His name. Let us begin at this moment to give praise to the ONE who made this amazing universe as we are inspired by this video: Lifesong – Casting Crowns.
