Assistance to Go the Distance

After the death of Moses, Joshua took over as the leader of the Israelites. Just like Moses, Joshua needed God’s assistance to go the distance in setting out to lay claim to the Promised Land. Joshua wanted to find out how best to take the land God had promised the Israelites so as recorded in Joshua 2, he sent two spies to gather intelligence. Joshua wanted to make the best decision by knowing the risk. He was a detailed person that wanted to make sure his decisions were accurate in order to best fulfill the purpose God gave him.

The two spies went to the city of Jericho and lodged at the house of Rahab. She took the men in even though there was tremendous risk. The facts Rahab bases her actions on included seeing and feeling the fear that people had because of what God had done for the Israelites. They had heard what Moses did when he parted the Red Sea and they knew that God was on the Israelites side. She also had seen what Joshua had done as an army general since taking over the leadership from Moses; destroying the two kings of the Amorites (v. 10).

Just like Rahab who knew whose side to be on when she accepted risk in taking in the spies, we need to know whose side to be on by listening and having good judgment in our decisions. We can do this by gathering facts, by using the experiences in our life, and by praying for direction.

Even though Rahab was a woman with a past (v. 1), she stepped ahead in faith just like we should do in life as we take action from the facts we gather and rely on our faith that God will provide a sure path. Always remember that your past does not keep you out of God’s plan.

We should expect a bright future as God goes before us to make sure the path is clear for all the amazing things He has in store for us.

This day with You God, we have gained some insight from today’s passage about Rahab and the great faith she demonstrated. We know that with Your guidance and our faith in this guidance, we have a bright future ahead. Amen.

Our Glorious Destination

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. – Joshua 1:8

The post, “Obedience and Achievement” has some thoughts about the benefits of knowing and applying God’s Word. If we take on challenges along the journey of life one day at a time using God’s Word, we will find our glorious destination.

Let us know the plan and carry it out on a daily basis. Let us pray for direction each day as we daily work to fine tune and improve. Then every challenge will become possible.

There is freedom in obeying God’s way because He cares for us more than we care for ourselves. Let’s start our day with this inspiring song called One Day at a Time by Jeremy Camp. God understands our needs more than we do so let’s accept His guidance as we journey through life one day at a time.

Obedience and Achievement

After the death of Moses, Joshua became the leader of the Israelites as they continued toward the promised land of Canaan. Reading in Joshua 1, God promises Joshua that He would be there to help lead to the land He swore to their ancestors (v. 6).

In today’s passage, we learn that there is a correlation between obedience and achievement. God tells Joshua to be strong and courageous; to obey the instructions found in the scripture. These same promises that God gave Joshua in verses 5 and 9 apply to our lives today. No one will be able to stand against us because God is with us providing strength and courage wherever we go.

This day with you Lord, we come to you in prayer. Help us to learn the playbook to a successful life, help us to daily work to improve, and to listen for Your instructions. We know that You will be with us wherever we go, giving strength and courage. Because of You Lord, no one will be able to stand up against us. Amen.

Questions for Reflection for Study of Joshua 1-6

God chooses Joshua to take over from Moses as the one responsible for leading the Israelites into the Promised Land. This seems like an impossible challenge but with God, all things are possible. We can be inspired over the next few weeks. Inspired to do amazing things and believing they will come to fruition. When we are on God’s team, we can make the impossible possible from what used to be a dream.

Each day, look at the challenges ahead with confidence. Look at each challenge squarely in the eye. Tell it God is bigger and then say goodbye. Success starts by having a plan. The reading plan below will be used as I share over the next few posts. It’s important to have a plan. I’m thankful that Jesus is God’s plan for us and by accepting Him as Savior; we have taken the steps necessary to make this day with Him amazing! At this link: God’s Plan for Us is a post about accepting God’s plan or reaffirming our “YES” for Christ.

Joshua 1
What promises does God give to Joshua concerning himself? What do you learn here about obedience and success? How does God’s promise to Joshua in verses 5 and 9 apply to your life today?

Joshua 2
Why, do you think, does Joshua send the spies to Jericho? What risk does Rahab take in hiding the spies? On what facts does she base her actions? How are facts and faith related in your life? How do you expect to see God going before you as He has for Israel?

Joshua 3
How do you feel about God after reading this passage? What do you learn in this passage about acting and trusting God? What things do the people learn from this miracle? What do you learn about God’s promises from this chapter?

Joshua 4
What is the importance of the stone memorials? When faced with difficulty, do you remember what God has done for you in past situations? What does the timing in verse 18 indicate about the crossing (see verse 23)?

Joshua 5
How does the news of God’s actions as explained in Joshua 4 affect the surrounding people? What about your character is revealed by your response to all of God’s commands? How can we be renewed with the Lord on a daily basis?

Joshua 6
What is God’s promise to Joshua concerning Jericho? How is this battle to be won? What do you learn here about God’s Word to and through His people?

Finish Strong

I just finished a study of 2 Thessalonians which is a letter written by Paul to clarify further his teaching about the second coming of Christ. This poem summarizes some of the main thoughts during the study.

Mark Shields's avatarStep Ahead

Get involved in the work
The Spirit has imparted
With wholehearted effort
To finish what was started.

Be ready for the call
By being worshipful;
Prompted by strong faith
And always being purposeful.

Use God’s great power
To turn your confusions
Into amazing results
With startling conclusions.

Help others love the Truth
By highlighting the good
And kind acts of people
Doing all they could.

Point out to unbelievers
God’s amazing splendor,
His awesome Creation
So to Him they surrender.

Being saved through
The sanctifying function
Of the Holy Spirit
And trinity conjunction.

Share in the amazing glory;
Stand on the firm foundation
Of God’s reliable principles
Provided for the duration.
