Doers of the Word

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. – James 1:22

Explained in the post “The Power of the Gospel” is that Paul wanted to share the Gospel with the Roman Christians because he knew the Gospel would meet their needs and the Gospel message would spread faster to all parts of the world.

Today, we look around us in this world and see poverty, sickness, and pain. We may ask God why He doesn’t do something. The thing is, He did by giving us the power of the Gospel to be His hands and feet to the world.

The Gospel message is so powerful because it continues to grow and can never be taken away or depleted. It has a beautiful and refreshing simplicity about it that sets us free and never lets us down. It is like our fuel to energize us to do good works.

Maybe today it’s time for us to take to heart the song Do Something by Matthew West and be doers of the Word.  As the song says, if not us then who?

The Power of the Gospel

In Romans 1:16-17, we learn about the power of the Gospel which had been promised through the Holy Scriptures. Other facts about the Gospel include Jesus dying on the Cross but being resurrected from the dead. Those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God receive grace and the power to receive eternal life.

Paul was eager to preach the Gospel message to the Roman Christians because he knew it could meet their deepest needs. Receiving God’s grace had already changed many lives in cities like Corinth and Ephesus. It had turned people from being a prisoner to sin into being an owner of the greatest power ever known giving them a freedom to take on challenges in a new way with amazing results.

The gospel is so powerful because in the spiritual realm it is a natural resource from God like fuel that is used by an engine. Faith is the fuel that feeds the spiritual engine of our heart. It is refined by the righteousness received by God’s grace and produces the energy for our souls to move towards good works.

This day with You God, we study Your Word because it helps us change for the better. We learn the way of life by applying Your Word in our life. Help us today to do great things in response to Your grace. Today we will be joyful, kind, share with others, and shine the light on Your behalf. Amen.

The Week Ahead

This week, we will continue the study of the book of Romans and share more thoughts.

Below are some questions for reflection:

Romans 1:16-17
* What are the facts about the gospel (See vv. 1-6, 15)? Why is it powerful? How is its power released? What is different about living by faith?

Romans 1:18-23
* How are God’s righteousness (v. 17) and His wrath (v. 18) related? What actions of man prompt God’s wrath? To what extent are you honoring God as God and being thankful?

Believe that God has a great plan for you.

Victory starts by having a plan. By accepting God’s plan for us, all we need to do is follow and believe He will provide the power. He will give the upper hand to make what seems impossible possible.

Set Free

We are free in Christ. With freedom comes the responsibility to make the right choices. Let us apply our faith by letting the Spirit council our activities this day. Take inspiration from this poem.

Mark Shields's avatarStep Ahead

The world full of trouble;
Can’t just do nothing.
Me and you right now,
Time to do something.

Listen to the Word,
Be the city on a hill,
Be the hands and feet,
Never standing still.

Thoughts of peace … of love;
Doing what God instructs.
Inspired by good examples,
Not those who self-destruct.

Overcome the past
And live better lives.
Put the destructive past
In the archives.

Be free in Christ;
Make the right choice.
The ONE with the answer;
In whom we all rejoice.

Called According to His Purpose

All things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. – Romans 8:28

As pointed out in the post “Fertile Ground for a Great Harvest”, Paul put a lot into his relationship with the Roman Christians. He knew that by teaching them, God’s purpose for him of spreading the Word would take root and the harvest would be plentiful because Rome was the center of communication throughout the world during this time.

Let us also see this purpose of Paul as our great purpose because the only things in life that last forever are the Word of God and our relationships with His people. Therefore, let us do things daily that last forever by getting to knowing God’s Word and creating a stream of compassion that flows from one Christian heart to another.

The song Who Am I by Casting Crowns points out that our forever home is with God. We are just here on earth for a short time. Our life on this earth will fade away into the sunset but our relationship with God and other Christians will last forever.
