Rivers of Living Water

On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” – John 7:37-38

The post “True Zeal” encourages us to move away from the fleeting appeal of material possessions and instead embrace the lasting treasures found in a relationship with Jesus. By cultivating a deep passion for faith and the intangible gifts of the Spirit, we allow rivers of living water to flow within us, bringing true joy and unwavering confidence. This profound connection assures us that God is ever-present, guiding us along His path to eternal fulfillment and ultimate peace.

This day with God is filled with hope and assurance, for He is always with us. As we step ahead along this journey, we are never alone. He is like the song Way Maker by Leeland points out. He guides our path as the Way Maker, opening doors and creating possibilities where there seemed to be none. He is the Miracle Worker, turning the impossible into reality and filling our hearts with awe. True to His word, He is the Promise Keeper, steadfast and faithful in all He declares. And amid our darkest moments, He shines as the Light, illuminating the way and bringing peace to our souls.

True Zeal

The sight of two dogs playing together often leads to one common scenario: one dog has a toy, and the other dog wants it. Despite numerous toys being scattered around, the toy in the other dog’s possession seems to hold a higher value. This behavior is not just a whimsical quirk of our canine companions but is deeply rooted in their psychology and social dynamics. Interestingly, humans exhibit similar tendencies, yearning for what others possess.

The Bible, in its wisdom, advises us with the commandment, “Thou shalt not covet.” This guidance emphasizes the importance of overcoming envy, so we are content with what we have. By adhering to this principle, we can avoid the pitfalls of endless desire and find solace in the blessings already present in our lives.

In Philippians 3:1-11, the Apostle Paul presents two kinds of zeal to underscore the transient nature of material possessions in comparison to the eternal value of faith in Jesus Christ. This passage serves as a profound reminder of the priorities that should govern our lives.

Paul delineates between two distinct forms of zeal:

  • A zeal for material things: This kind of zeal focuses on earthly possessions and worldly achievements. It is characterized by an intense pursuit of wealth, status, and other tangible assets.
  • A zeal for gaining the intangibles like faith in Jesus: This zeal is directed towards spiritual growth and the deepening of one’s relationship with Christ. It seeks the intangible, eternal rewards that come from nurturing faith and walking in the path of righteousness.

Paul vividly contrasts material things with eternal things to highlight the relative insignificance of material things:

  • Material things are losses compared to faith gained in Christ: Paul considers all his worldly accomplishments and possessions as losses when compared to the priceless gain of knowing Christ. This perspective invites believers to reevaluate what they hold dear.
  • We can get so wrapped up in our things which are meaningless: The pursuit of material wealth and status can consume our lives, often leading us away from the true source of joy and fulfillment.
  • What Jesus gives: In stark contrast to the fleeting nature of material things, Jesus offers believers the Holy Spirit, an abiding joy, and unwavering confidence.

From Paul’s teaching, several crucial lessons emerge:

  • Let us keep our mind on something bigger than our earthly life itself: Our focus should always be on the grand plan of God’s kingdom and the eternal life He promises.
  • In all situations, God is big enough: No matter the challenge or circumstance, God is sovereign and sufficient to meet our needs.
  • He’s always by our side: God’s presence is constant, providing support and comfort through every trial.
  • Have faith in His Way: Trust in God’s plan and His timing, knowing that His way is the best path for us.
  • Wake up each morning with a passion to grow in faith: Begin each day with a fervent desire to deepen your relationship with Christ, seeking spiritual growth and guidance.
  • Be confident and grateful for the power gained in knowing Christ: Embrace the strength and empowerment that comes from a life rooted in Christ, filled with gratitude for the transformative power of faith.

Today’s passage challenges believers to shift their focus from the temporary allure of material possessions to the enduring riches found in a relationship with Jesus. By fostering a zeal for faith and the intangibles of the Spirit, we can experience true joy and confidence, secure in the knowledge that God is always with us and His way is the path to eternal fulfillment.

This day with You God, we are thankful for today’s passage about the true zeal we should have. Help us to keep our mind on the future possibilities with You. As we wake up each morning, may we have a zeal to grow in faith and to spark curiosity about Your love, grace, and truth into the minds of others. For the joy we have in You outshines prestige, pleasure, or possessions. May we limit worldly desires and take in the unlimited goodness available to us because of accepting Jesus in our hearts. Amen.

Looking Back at Philippians 1 Through 2 for Encouragement on the Journey Ahead

Rooted in the Word, we are nourished and uplifted — strengthened from within by its truth and grace. It prepares our hearts and minds to face difficult situations not with fear, but with boldness and courage, standing firm to defend the Gospel. United in purpose and unwavering in faith, we stick to the divine plan, knowing we’re not alone in our mission. With confidence born of spiritual conviction, we step forward into our calling, equipped and empowered to fulfill what God has set before us.

Reflecting on the journey through Philippians 1:1-11 and shared in the post, Nourishing and Uplifting, God’s grace nourishes and uplifts the soul. Like nutrients flowing from the root, the very best spiritual nutrition flows from the grace of God, who sent His Son to die for our sins. This divine grace, combined with our heartfelt praise for what He has done, forms a powerful blend of spiritual nutrients and ensures our spiritual growth and fulfillment.

Noted in the post Responding to Difficult Situations obtained from the study of Philippians 1:12-18 is that there is a bright future in the hands of God. This optimistic outlook is rooted in a deep-seated trust in God’s providence and purpose. Paul understood that while he might be physically confined, his outlook and message was boundless.

Highlighted in Philippians 1:19-30 is that we have sufficient courage because we see that the true reward is with Christ, so we have what it takes to unify, take a stand, and strive for the truth; to do the right thing and live with integrity. To live a life worthy of the Gospel.

The principles of teamwork and humility brought out in Philippians 2:1-11 and written about in The Importance of Unity invites believers to emulate the unity, selflessness, and sacrificial love demonstrated by Jesus. By striving together with one spirit and mind, valuing others above ourselves, and following Christ’s example of humble service, believers can achieve spiritual growth and experience great joy.

Like Paul wrote in Philippians 2:12-18, we are called to embrace the challenge he presented to the Philippians and trust in the Way. As pointed out in Stick to the Plan, this requires discipline and perseverance to stay focused on sharing the Good News. As we commit to this mission, God will work within us, transforming us day by day through continuous effort. By striving to grow more like Christ and keeping our eyes on the ultimate reward, we can faithfully run the race set before us and shine as a testament to His glory.

The thought received when reading Philippians 2:19-30 and shared in the post Step Ahead Confidently Into Your Calling is that each of us carries a tapestry of unique experiences, cherished memories, and personal strengths. Even the weaknesses we see in ourselves hold the potential to be transformed into sources of strength. When we entrust these imperfections to God, He has the power to carry us through and turn them into advantages, showing His grace and purpose in our lives. All He asks is for us is to be willing and open, ready to let His hand guide us toward growth and renewal.

Paul’s deep love for the Philippians was revealed through his faithful prayers and unwavering encouragement. He reminded them that they could rejoice in a radiant future, anchored in Christ’s promise. Though challenges would come, they had sufficient courage to stand firm—united in spirit and mind, reflecting the beauty of their shared faith. As they walked in unity, they were called to shine like stars in a dark world, illuminating hope and truth. Each one was gifted uniquely by God, equipped to serve others with grace and purpose, becoming living testimonies of His love.
