While off during summers going through college, I worked for a construction company. In construction, builders rely on specific tools to measure the integrity of what is being built, ensuring every part can stand strong and true. When building a house, for example, a simple but essential tool called a level is used to confirm that walls, cabinets, windows, and other structures are perfectly aligned. If the bubble in the level isn’t centered, the builder knows something is off and needs correction. In the same way, our lives benefit from tools that help us check our alignment — guiding us back to what is steady, true, and built to last.

For building out faith, the Word of God is our most valuable tool. Reading today in Jeremiah 20, Pashur the priest reacted harshly to Jeremiah’s message, refusing to hear the truth God had given him to speak. In anger, he ordered Jeremiah to be beaten and locked in the stocks for an entire day, hoping to silence the warning about the consequences of idol worship. Yet even in suffering, Jeremiah stood firm, bearing the cost of proclaiming God’s truth to a people who did not want to listen.

Jeremiah lived with a constant tension pressing on his soul, caught between obedience to God and the hostility of those who rejected his message. Insults followed him wherever he went, whispered behind his back and hurled openly by people who despised the truth he carried. Every word he spoke for the Lord placed him in real danger, yet he could not remain silent. His courage reminds us that standing for truth often invites opposition, but faithfulness to God is worth more than the approval or comfort we might lose along the way.

The lesson is unmistakable: even when it is difficult, God calls for people of integrity who will stand firm in truth. Those who share His message must be willing to endure criticism without shrinking back, choosing instead to remain people of principle and character. This means making a stand on the tough issues that matter, not bending to pressure or fear. It means setting your mind on what is right and fair, trusting that God honors those who remain faithful to His standards.

🙏 Lord, we thank You that justice is a sacred pillar of our faith, a reflection of Your own righteous character. As we labor to build up Your house in our generation, let Your Word be the level that keeps us upright—steady, aligned, and true. Keep our hearts honest before You, free from crooked motives or hidden faults. Shape us into servants who walk straight, speak truth, and live with integrity. May everything we build be worthy of Your name, and may our lives remain faithful as we serve You with humility and devotion. Amen.
