Knowing Our Point in Life

Why did the pencil go to church?

Because it was trying to find its point and fulfill its calling!

The Lord wants all of us to know our point in life and fulfill our calling. As we read today in Jeremiah 1:1-10, let’s first remember the political, social, and moral situation before and during Jeremiah’s reign. Jeremiah’s prophetic ministry began during a time of national uncertainty and spiritual decline. Roughly a century earlier, the northern kingdom of Israel had collapsed under the weight of its rebellion and idolatry, serving as a sobering warning to its southern counterpart, Judah. Now, as corruption and complacency spread through Judah’s leadership and people, God raised up Jeremiah—a young, reluctant prophet—with a divine commission to speak truth to a nation on the brink. In today’s passage, we witness the sacred moment of his calling: not born of personal ambition, but of God’s sovereign purpose to uproot and to build, to warn and to restore. His voice would carry the weight of heaven’s plea for repentance and renewal.

God’s call on Jeremiah’s life was not vague or general—it was precise, purposeful, and deeply personal. He was appointed as a prophet to confront the spiritual drift of Judah, to speak hard truths with unwavering clarity. His task was to warn the people of the consequences of their rebellion and plead with them to return to faithful obedience and trust in the Lord. Yet despite repeated messages and divine patience, the people had hardened their hearts and turned away. They had forsaken the covenant, chased idols and ignored the voice of the One who had delivered them. Jeremiah’s mission, then, was not only to announce judgment but to express God’s grief and longing—a living reminder that even in discipline, God’s desire was restoration.

Just as God had a specific calling for Jeremiah, He has intentional plans for your life too. You were not created by accident or for mere survival; you were formed with divine purpose, crafted by the hands of the One who knows you best. The same God who appointed Jeremiah before he was born has also equipped you with the potential to fulfill your unique assignment. Even when the path feels uncertain or the task seems daunting, you can step forward with confidence—because He promises to provide the wisdom, strength, and direction you need. Your calling may not look like Jeremiah’s, but it carries the same eternal weight: to reflect God’s heart in a world that desperately needs it.

🙏 Lord, You are the One who formed us, who knew us before we took our first breath. Just as You called Jeremiah with purpose and clarity, we believe You have appointed us for a reason beyond what we can see. Help us to trust Your voice even when the task feels heavy or the path unclear. Give us courage to speak truth, to live faithfully, and to reflect Your heart in all we do. When we feel inadequate, remind us that You equip those You call. Teach us to walk in obedience, not fear—to lean on Your wisdom and not our own. May our life reaffirm Your grace and point others back to You. We surrender our plans to Your hands, knowing You will guide us step by step. Amen.
