Pulling the Load

While off during summers going through college, I worked for a local construction company. One summer we worked to repair the roof of the historic train depot pictured above. It was hard work, hot, and gave you motivation to get a college degree so you could someday work in a climate-controlled environment.

Not only was it hot, but the roof was 40 feet high and somewhat steep. You find out after a while to stop looking down because your focus is on the negative impact on your body if you fall. Would you break a leg, a shoulder, hips, or scull? Would you survive? The lesson is that you don’t look down at things that cause fear. Instead … look up. Look up to God during times of fear.

Noted in today’s study of Colossians 4:7-18 is how Paul faced tremendous fear in his circumstances. He was in prison when he wrote this letter but courageously looked up to God and was grateful for the fellowship of believers to help pull the load.

In the closing verses of Colossians, Paul lifts the curtain on a remarkable fellowship of believers—men whose quiet faithfulness and shared burdens helped carry the gospel forward. These co-workers in the kingdom were not merely names on a page; they were fellow servants in the Lord, faithful brothers, and even fellow prisoners who stood with Paul in hardship. Through their prayers, their comforting presence, and their willingness to communicate Paul’s difficult circumstances, they became living testimonies of grace in action. Their greetings and well wishes remind us that ministry is never a solo endeavor—it is a group working together in love, purpose, and the Spirit of Christ.

In the face of adversity, the body of Christ becomes a sanctuary of strength. When trials press in, we find comfort in the encouragement of others—faithful allies who help us stand with courage against the enemy. Fear loses its grip where faith takes root, for we are not alone or powerless. We are infused with supernatural boldness, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and sustained by the prayers of those who walk beside us. Together, we endure, not as isolated individuals, but as a united front—brothers and sisters contending for good, lifting one another up, and advancing the kingdom with unwavering resolve.

As Paul’s letter draws to a close, it leaves us with a charge: to share what we’ve learned, to live what we believe, and to walk boldly in the hope secured by Christ. Because of what Jesus has done, we are not only redeemed—we are empowered. The mission before us is not ours to carry alone; the Holy Spirit equips us to do more than we ever imagined, using our unique gifts to uplift others and advance the kingdom. Every act of diligent, cheerful service matters. Every moment spent encouraging, praying, and working in love is a step toward victory. So let us embrace our role as co-workers in the Kingdom, knowing that our labor is never in vain and our hope is always alive.

🙏 Lord Jesus, thank You for the faithful ones who walk beside us—brothers and sisters who encourage, pray, and stand firm in the face of trials. When fear whispers, remind us that faith speaks louder. Fill us with supernatural courage, the kind that endures hardship and presses forward with joy. Empower us to use our gifts to serve others, knowing that every act of kindness, every word of truth, and every moment of cheerful labor matters in Your kingdom. Help us to share the hope we’ve found in You—the hope that never fades, because it is anchored in Your finished work. May we step boldly into the mission You’ve given us, trusting that the Holy Spirit will do more through us than we could ever dream. We thank You for the privilege of being co-workers in Your Kingdom. Strengthen our hands, steady our hearts, and keep us faithful to the end. In Your mighty name, Amen.
