Be on Guard and Focus on Christ

Jesus was telling those who were listening in Luke 21:20-38 that Jerusalem would be destroyed as punishment for the death of the prophets since the beginning of the world; vengeance for not recognizing God’s coming and to fulfill prophecy. He said that there would be great distress, wars, wrath, and imprisonment as Jerusalem would be trampled by Gentiles. Things of nature like the sun, moon and stars would also give signs of the end of time (v. 25).

Not only should we be on guard about the signs but most of all be ready by putting our attention on Christ. Our faith in the Son of man will help us to overcome fear or apprehension. We will be able to tell what the future holds just like when the fig tree sprouts leaves and we know summer is coming. If we stand firm, take in the warning signs, and continue to pray, our hearts will be warmed by the confidence of victory through Jesus.

Until He comes or calls, let us internalize His guiding principles. Lord, we ask that we use our devotional time to internalize your guiding principles so that we are always ready for Your return. We are thankful for this chance to go to the Internet and read posts from those we can learn from and continue to grow. The posts we read keep us alert and help us to focus on You in every activity throughout our day. Amen!

About Mark Shields

Mark volunteers as a member of the media ministry team at his church. A few years ago, he started an on-line Bible study guide called “This Day with God Devotional”. He uses this as a tool in his journey through the Bible. We live in a very busy world with busy schedules so this tool has helped him continue with daily Bible reading and study. Each of the studies are designed to help apply our faith in the work place, at school, or at home. Join him on this journey or check in every so often to read his thoughts.
