Qualities of Leadership Found in Moses

The events laid out in Exodus 32:15-35 raised some good points in how to respond when those we lead let us down. When Moses came down from the mountain, the people were worshiping a golden calf they had made. At first, Moses reacted like most of us would with anger by throwing down the tablets in which the Ten Commandments were inscribed; breaking them into pieces (v. 19).

Within this passage are some qualities of leadership we can pick up from Moses. One is how the Levites rallied to Moses when he said “whoever is for the Lord, come to me (v. 26).” Another is when Moses went to the Lord in prayer to discuss the people worshiping the golden calf. He became a humble advocate for his people by asking God to forgive their sin – but if not, he then ask God to blot him out of the book He has written (v. 32).”

God’s response to Moses was that those who have sinned will be punished. He told Moses that a terrible disease would be brought on the people but He told Moses to continue leading the people to the Promised Land. Just as Moses, we need to go to God and humbly ask for mercy.

This day with You Lord, help us to humbly accept that there will be some things in life that we have no control over. Like in today’s passage, Moses had no control over his impatient people waiting for him at the bottom of the mountain. Help us to respond like Moses in these situations by praying for them. Help us to be the link that connects Your power to them and shows them the Way. Amen.

The Week Ahead

This week, we will continue the journey and share more thoughts from the study of Exodus 32 and 33.

Below are some questions for reflection:

Exodus 32:15-35
* What qualities of leadership do you observe in Moses? What is the attitude of Moses when he went to the Lord to talk about the people worshiping the golden calf? Moses pleads to God for mercy on the people and what is God’s answer to Moses?

Exodus 33
* What is Moses’ regular habit? Who goes with him? What evidences that he actually meets God there? What kind of relationship exist between Moses and God? What steps will you take towards creating a friendship with God?

Believe that God has a great plan for you.

Victory starts by having a plan. By accepting God’s plan for us, all we need to do is follow and believe He will provide the power. He will give the upper hand to make what seems impossible possible.

Soaring

We can display oneness with other believers in Christ today and soar as on eagles’ wings. Be inspired and build up the house of the Lord today. Take inspiration from the poem below.

Mark Shields's avatarStep Ahead

Faith in Jesus Christ
Sets all of us free
In order to be
All that we can be.

Faith in Jesus Christ
As in a rain shower,
Washes away the sin;
Gives a great power.

The Spirit indwells
With total abundance
Giving a sense
Of utter oneness.

Praying for each other
As two are better
Than one in all
Challenging endeavors.

At home or at work,
No job is boring
So on eagles’ wings
We keep on soaring.

Hold Onto the Promise

But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. – Romans 8:25

God’s actions seemed delayed when Moses went to the top of the mountain to receive the Ten Commandments and the people got impatient. As pointed out in the post “Hope Produces Patience” our response when the answers to our prayers seem delayed should be to hold on to the promise just like in this song: Hope in Front of Me by Danny Gokey.

Hope Produces Patience

Moses went up to the Mountain to get the Ten Commandments and was gone for such a long time that the people became impatient as explained in Exodus 32:1-14. They looked to Aaron for leadership but he guided the people astray by suggesting they bring their gold earrings so they could make a golden idol cast in the shape of a calf. God was furious and wanted to destroy them but Moses pleads with God to give them a second chance.

We are not that much different today, we get impatient with God as we desire earthly objects for rewards. We create idols to worship like nicer cars and bigger houses rather than worshiping the ONE who created all things. The ONE who delivers us from the bondage of sin. The ONE who wants to be with us and provide eternal joy.

This day with You Lord, some of our dreams may look to have no chance. Help us to maintain our faith even when some of our answers may seem delayed. We ask that our hope will produce patience. Even in hard times, we can have joy if we have faith that tomorrow will be a better day. Lift us up today; remembering what Jesus went through on the cross. We are assured of brighter days ahead because of the gift of Your Son and this thought inspires us to step ahead so we never give up hope. Amen.
