Cut it Out

For the Word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. – Hebrews 4:12

Within the post “One Bad Apple Can Spoil the Whole Bunch” discussed is how Paul instructs the Corinthian church to expel a leader within the church because of sexual misconduct.

One thought brought out in the post is that many problems within our society today were initiated from the lax attitude of sexual immorality in the 1990’s. It took 20 years to manifest itself as a cancer in society with all the sexual harassment cases in Hollywood, the media, and in government leadership.

Like cancer, we must cut it out.  We must step ahead of hate, iniquity, and other corrupting influences in our society that keep us down; instead desire the authenticity, sincerity and certainty that God provides. Take inspiration from today’s song Stronger by Hillsong.

One Bad Apple Can Spoil the Whole Bunch

Reading in 1 Corinthians 5, the church had a leader involved in sexual misconduct and Paul instructs the Corinthian church to expel the man from the leadership position. The corruption within the church needed to be confronted and they needed to set a standard for church discipline. The purpose was restoration and this required hard-love toward the sinner.

As the old saying goes, one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch. A leader must be publicly rebuked so others are warned. If not, it infiltrates the society as a whole because people believe it is not an issue. Think of all the sexual harassment cases that have recently been reported on. In some cases, it took many years for the sin to totally manifest into a society. The lax attitude of sexual immorality in the 1990’s took 20 years to manifest itself as a cancer in society.

Think about the tragic 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas. The shooter planned this for a long time. His aim was destruction. He destroyed many lives that night in Las Vegas. The question is why? Why didn’t he aspire for something of meaning to build up lives rather than kill and destroy? The answer my friends is the difference between a righteous person and an evil person. The killer was a person who gambled, who sought prostitutes, who only built up wealth for his own personal gratification.

Why not build a life of meaning that helps people? Be a winner – not a loser. Sometimes the greatest competition we face is within our own mind. We all face challenges in life. A student may have a test and may say in their mind, “It’s too difficult … I can’t do this”. Others may take on the challenge like a field goal kicker in football I heard about one time who said he recites scripture in his mind when in a pressure situation like kicking the game winning field goal.

A scripture like Philippians 4:13 “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength” and other memorized scriptures can be very useful when faced with pressure moments in life. Let us all step ahead of competition by taking in God’s Word to fortify. Remain optimistic because with God, we are highly favored.

With the use of your phone, just a click away are scripture, sermons, and uplifting music.

This day with You Lord, You give us hope even in a time of despair. Our growing faith is never depleted and gives courage in a time of doubt. Your Love demonstrated on the Cross brought victory in a time of hate. Lord, be with us today to help us step ahead of hate, iniquity, and other corrupting influences in our life that keeps us down. Instead, let us desire authenticity, sincerity, and the certainty that a life with You provides. Amen.

Build Up and Encourage

If you have anything against anyone, forgive them, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses. – Mark 11:25-26

A few thoughts listed in the post “Power in Life” is that there is power in our life when we let God be the final judge. There is power in our life when we give God credit for what we are blessed with. There is power in our life when we strive to be good examples for others to follow.

We should approach each day with patience, gentleness, love, and humility. Never judge but build up and encourage others. As the song Forgiven by Crowder points out, we all have done things we wish we would not have done.

We all have sinned and should forgive others because we all need forgiveness. To gain worthiness, all we need is grace which is available when we accept that the debt has been paid by our Savior on the Cross.

Power in Life

Reading 1 Corinthians 4, Paul describes the apostles as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the mysteries God has revealed (v. 1). God is judge over all our motives and we should apply the scriptural principle of patience when judging others. If we are tempted to judge, we should be reminded that everyone has tremendous value in His eyes.

There is nothing wrong with a person giving their viewpoints. That’s how we learn and grow from each other but God is the final judge. In the meantime, we can learn from others and the decisions they have made that has brought hardship in their life for they provide a lesson for others.

We should humbly give credit to God for what we are blessed with in life because He is the source of all our spiritual gifts.  With Christ, the weak become strong and provide a good example for others to follow.

We can learn from each other or from sermons about patience and God’s grace. Grace is God’s gift. This kind gift from God is always available. Be patient with others and with God’s timing because grace is like a flowing stream of water that keeps coming and coming. – Thought from sermon of Steve Ramsdell, 10-17-10.

Lord this day, we have learned from this passage that there is power in our life when we let You be the final judge. There is power in our life when we give You credit for what we are blessed with. There is power in our life when we strive to be good examples for others to follow. We pray that we approach each day with patience, gentleness, love, and humility. Amen.

Seeing and Believing

This poem was written after remembering a story from my high school baseball coach who gave a speech to the team the day before a game. It’s a story about turning dreams into reality.

Not feeling well
Bed ridden for a week,
A golfer was sick,
Barley able to speak.

So in his bed
He dreamed of playing,
Hitting the perfect shot
As he was laying.

For several weeks
He played in his mind
So he would stay on top
And not get behind.

Day after day he played
Round after round
Getting better each time
So perfection was found.

After several weeks
He got much better
Went to the golf course
Shot his best round ever.
