Thought From Devotional This Day 11-17-2023

A lesson from 1 Kings 11:1-8 is Solomon’s spiritual decline. He had strengths of wisdom and wealth during the first part of his reign, but his major weakness was the alliances he made with nations that served idols. He was not devoted totally to the ONE true God because his wives turned his heart to their gods (v. 2). Because of his lack of focus, his kingdom was filled with disorder and future generations would see the kingdom be torn apart.

Steps Directed by the Lord

The takeaway from “Pray for the Way” is to discover the meaning of what we read, see, or hear. It’s important to gather all the knowledge or information that can be collected. Then, ask questions, reflect, and listen for instructions during your prayer time. Prayer is your greatest power as you ask God for direction.

So this day, if you see darkness ahead or can’t figure out something, do as the song Look Up Child by Lauren Daigle says. Look up to the Lord for direction.

Pray for the Way

*A guy is on his way home from work. His wife calls him and tells him to be careful because she saw on the news that some lunatic was driving the wrong way on the interstate. He says it’s worse than that … There are hundreds of them.

In reading John 7:25-36, there was confusion and misunderstanding about the right Way. They knew where Jesus was from and believed they would not know where the Messiah was from (v. 27). Some said that Jesus was a good man, but others said that He was a deceiver, so many desired to kill Jesus at this time. They were unsuccessful because His hour had not yet come (v. 30).

The chief priests and Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest Him (v. 32). Jesus said that He would be with them for a short time and then would go to the one who sent Him. He said they would look for Him but would not be able to come where He is. They misunderstood because they thought Jesus meant He would go to another place in this physical world instead of alongside the Father in heaven.

Today’s passage gives us a good lesson in the need to discover the true meaning of what we read, see, or hear. It’s important to gather all the knowledge or information that can be collected. Then, ask questions, reflect, and listen for instructions during our prayer time. Prayer is our greatest power as we ask God for direction.

Common Thread

Noted in “Follow The Example” is that Jesus sees worth in all people, their strengths, and their potential. With forgiveness and letting go of what’s bitter, we amazingly can start to get how much Jesus loves all people. He’s given an example and it’s up to us to follow.

Take inspiration from The American Face by The Isaacs and see from Jesus’ point of view that there is great worth in all people because of the great potential that the Creator has blessed each person with.

The hope is that the common parent in our creator and Jesus our common thread brings us together and heals a nation. Individuals and churches may differ in convictions or practice but there is one common thread that binds us; the power of Christ in what we believe and how we live.

Follow the Example

There is one common thread that binds us; the power of Christ in what we believe and how we live. This day, let us accept the stream of grace that keeps flowing to our hearts and minds into the soul. Let us follow the Example of Jesus as we step ahead today.

Reading in John 7:1-24, Jesus didn’t want to go to Judea because the Jewish leaders were looking for a way to kill Him (v. 1). His brothers urged Him to go to Judea so the people could see His works. Jesus explains that the world hates Him because He testifies that its works are evil.

The feast of tabernacles was going on in Judea. Jesus stayed behind in Galilee while His brothers went to the festival. Eventually, Jesus went to the festival but tried to stay out of the limelight (v. 10). There was whispering about Jesus among the crowd. Some people at the feast said that Jesus was a good man, but others said that He was a deceiver.

Then Jesus began to teach at the festival and the Jews were amazed. They wondered how Jesus knew the Scriptures so well even though He had never been to seminary (v. 15). Jesus told them that they would know the source of His teaching by doing the will of God.

Several controversial subjects came up like them being angry about Him healing a man on the Sabbath. Another was about judging others. Jesus says, “Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly (v. 24).

Jesus sees worth in all people, their strengths, and their potential. With forgiveness and letting go of what’s bitter, we amazingly can start to get how much Jesus loves all people. He’s given an example and it’s up to us to follow.
