The purpose of communion is to remember the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross. Communion is also known as the Lord’s Supper as explained by Paul below in 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
Reading today in John 6:41-59, Jesus said that He was the Bread of Life in verses 25-40 and the people began to grumble because they were thinking of physical food. Jesus explains that his flesh or victorious death on the cross brings eternal life is real food and his blood real drink. Those who accept this sacrifice of the body and blood of Christ receive eternal life.
Jesus lives because of the Father, and we live because of Jesus (v. 57). This day with God, let Jesus carry our burdens so we can simply do God’s will. With Jesus or the Bread of Life, our spiritual body remains connected to the nutritious vine that provides life eternal.
Like bread that sustains life, Jesus supports our basic needs now and into eternity.
Father God, You want what is good for us and You know what will benefit us more than we do. Because of grace, the past does not define us. From this time forward, there is peace and we accept Your love. There is no more anxiety because the void within our soul is filled with the Bread of Life that supports our basic needs now and into eternity. Healthy food for our soul that provides fitness forever because of Jesus in whose name we pray … amen.
