Questions for Reflection for Study of Psalm 30-37

I want to take this time to thank all of you my readers. I’ve found this blog to be a great tool in my journey through the Bible and you, my readers are keeping me accountable to daily Bible reading and study. We live in a busy world with busy schedules and being able to share some thoughts about this journey with others across this world through the Internet is truly a blessing.

Last year, the journey through God’s Word took us through the book of Romans, Proverbs, and finished with 1 Corinthians. As the journey continues this year, I will finish going through the Psalms. The Psalms are personal and public poems of worship used as hymns.

The mission of this blog is to bring out ways to better apply God’s Word in our life at work, at home, and within our neighborhoods. The questions for reflection for the study of Psalm 31-37 below will help bring out some thoughts and ideas over the next few weeks.

The Lord speaks to us in various ways – visions, dreams, and life’s circumstances; even advice from others. Most of all, God speaks through the Bible. Thus, the main purpose of this blog is to study His Word with the intent to gain wisdom that we may apply in our own lives and also help others along the journey.

The reading plan below will be used as I share over the next few posts. It’s important to have a plan. I’m thankful that Jesus is God’s plan for us and by accepting Him as Savior; we have taken the steps necessary to make this day with Him amazing!

Remembering Wins

You are made for God’s purpose. Over the last ten posts, I’ve given some ideas and one example of a faith purpose God has given me. I believe that God has a purpose for everyone and my hope is that maybe a few ideas presented can be modified to help you achieve your own unique family, financial, career, fitness, or fun goals. God wants us to have fun else why would He set aside more days for celebration than for fasting?

Expect good to happen when planning with God. Your God given purpose might be to be the best parent or grandparent you can be. It might be to study and learn a discipline in college, grow in a career, or grow a business. It might be to find a mate for life, start a family, and be the best parent you can be. Whatever God given purpose you have, my hope is that some of the ideas brought out in this series of writings will help in some way to make your dreams come true. When they do, write them down so you can go back to them and know that you’ve done it before and you can do it again; building a winning tradition through your life and for those who have the opportunity to follow.

God has given us the chance to determine our destiny. King Solomon said that as you think in your heart, so you are. Jesus brought glory on earth by being focused at completing the job God gave him to do. When greatness is expected from someone, they begin to believe they can succeed and they seem to rise to the level needed to become great. That’s why we need to praise young people for small  accomplishments. Research has found that there is an unconscious positive effect when a teacher believes a student will do well. It helps their performance.

What prophecies control your life? Don’t let other people or external negative expectations dominate your attitudes about yourself. You can’t force others around you to change their attitudes about you but you do have the freedom to change your own thoughts and attitudes about yourself. We see this in sports. How many times have you heard people say a team can’t beat another? Yet, the team wins because they expected to win and were motivated to pay the price with practice, dedication and concentration toward the victory.

I heard someone say once, if you pay attention to God, you are prepared for the world. If you pay attention to the world, you will become stressed and confused. For a Christian, the way to pay attention to God is found in three tools that God gives us. The first is His Word. The Bible is useful to teach us what is right. As the athlete gains stamina and strength with exercise, the Christian gains faith by reading the Bible. Faith grows the more the Bible is read. The second tool is the Holy Spirit. Through prayer we can receive directions and develop plans to be more self-disciplined. The third is the church where we have the opportunity to develop teamwork by learning together, caring for others together, and enjoying the company of friends together.

A good game plan is so important to winning in sports. A team will set out to execute the game plan in practice. Similarly in life, a purpose and plan is important. Receiving a definite purpose from God helps set objectives you’re willing to commit your life to achieving. It establishes a direction for your life and helps you to know where your desired destination is.

I once heard a story of a swimmer that set out to swim from Catalina Island to California’s mainland. It was a foggy morning with vision only about fifty feet and the fog didn’t allow the swimmer to see the shore line. They gave up half a mile away. Later, the swimmer was asked why they gave up just half mile from the goal and the answer was that they would’ve finished had they been able to see the shore. They gave up because they couldn’t see the reference point to where they were going. As Christians, we have the Bible as our game plan and it tells us that heaven is where we are going and Christ is our reference point.

My hope is that all discover the freedom in Christ Jesus because the clear way to victory has been provided.  Our hope as a believer is to be righteous through the spirit. Then as our faith expresses itself through love, we all win.

In last week’s writing titled “Determination”, there was a video from the movie “Rudy” to help explain the main points. This week, I would like to show another clip from the movie. This time it’s about the reward after you’ve given it your all and being able to always remember the win. Rudy was told he lacked the size and talent to play but he convinces coach Ara Parseghian to give him a spot on the football practice or scout team. His teammates had seen the hard work he had put in over the last two years and pushed their coach to let Rudy suit up and run on the field for their last home game of the 1975 season. The clip starts with the crowd chanting to let Rudy in on the final play. Take a few minutes to see the video: Rudy.

The choice is yours. You are the one that will choose the prophecies and expectations that govern your life. You are the one that will act with boldness, with determination, and with positive expectancy. Feel free to download a copy of the Purpose Tool spreadsheet at this link. Go to the tab named Wins and record your past and present wins. As you record your daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly wins, your confidence will grow and you will believe in your potential. As a result, a winning tradition is established.

Determination

Turning dreams into reality and fulfilling God’s purpose for us in life is not easy. It was not easy for Jesus to fulfill His purpose here on earth. Some obstacles we face in life may include hardships, trouble, embarrassments, disadvantages, impediments, dilemmas, and predicaments. Sometimes it’s hard to please people or hard to persuade people and it takes a lot of hard work to get things right. As we slide down the banister of life, we hope all the splinters will be pointed in the right direction.  Hope and desire can act as a bridge builder to span the gulf of silence between a person’s soul and the outer world. These qualities are available to everyone.

What pressures do you have? Is it something like meeting an impossible deadline? How do you deal with them? Sometimes a song can lift your spirits. In the Beatles song, “We Can Work It Out” the key word is we. With God and good people around you, no one can be against you and it’s going to work out.

You may have some major problem to overcome but you can be inspired from what nature or history teaches us. Did you know that a pearl forms from a piece of sand? It causes irritation or even pain to a clam but it then produces a coating around the sand and after a while the thing that once caused pain turns into what we know as a pearl. History teaches us that Winston Churchill also went through some irritation. When he was young, he had a speech impediment and took extensive speech therapy during childhood and as a young adult yet became a great communicator who held England together during World War II.

Teddy Roosevelt lost both his wife and mother on the same day in 1884 and on top of that, it was on Valentine’s Day. Yet he overcame his difficulties to eventually become governor of New York, great naturalist, explorer, author, and soldier, and our nation’s 26th president in 1901. Another lesson from history comes from a young boy whose dad went through some tough times. He had been wealthy but lost most of what he had. The boy wanted to attend a university but the family didn’t have enough money. He never blamed his dad and was satisfied to work in a shop. That boys name was William Shakespeare.

What can change your thinking and in turn your attitude and finally your behavior is God’s love for you. This love is an affirmation and you can internalize this love to give self-confidence, determination, and help when faced with difficulties. God’s love inspires us to hope by praying daily, asking Him to help plan step by step, and the initiative to take action.

I heard a story that took place in the 1930’s. Times were tough and there was a farmer who was in debt and had lost hope. He became so distraught that he killed himself and his wife. His two sons had tried to give him hope with an idea but this idea only became possible a few years later when they caught a break. You see, the laws of that time changed.  Alcohol became legal and their business idea now had a chance. The sons decided to read up on how to grow grapes in order to start a vineyard. With their two hundred acre farm and a little knowledge gained from books at the library, the two brothers overcame their adversity early in life. Today we know these brothers as Earnest and Julio Gallo who founded the largest exporter of California wines in 1933.

If you have a good idea about something, don’t let critiques snuff out enthusiasm. Keep pushing for ideas you believe in.  In 1949, a man looked at his wallet to notice he didn’t have enough money to pay for his dinner at a restaurant. He had to get his wife to bail him out but this embarrassment spurred the idea for the first credit card called the Diners’ club.

Don’t let fear hold you back or let distractions gobble up your time. Be like a farmer waiting patiently for his crop. Understand that it doesn’t happen overnight. Nature needs to play its part in helping the crops to grow. Learn to wait and as you wait, embrace God’s wonder like how plants grow, how things work, and how big His universe is. Experience life by living in God’s spirit and truth with a passion for what you know your purpose is. Always be willing to recognize those around you that make you a better person.

Personal written statements, favorite inspirational videos, sermon notes, favorite Bible verses, and photos are affirmations; giving inspiration and patience. They provide positive material for your mind to act upon. Your mind is like a computer. If you give it good data to work with, it will process good information that will help with effectiveness and efficiency. Give the mind positives to process and produce qualities like enthusiasm, optimism, and initiative.

Without enthusiasm, a person lethargically walks through life in a constant bad mood, never looking forward to anything. The author and minister, Norman Peal once said, “There is real magic in enthusiasm. It spells the difference between mediocrity and accomplishment.”  Ask yourself the question, how might more enthusiasm change my day today? Show enthusiasm and others will be more open to your ideas. Express hope for the future and others will want to follow.

Enthusiasm positions a person’s mind so that it functions on a higher plane. It lifts up a person to new heights similar to traveling in a hot air balloon and seeing things with a broader perspective. The human mind responds to stimuli, through which it may be “keyed up” to high rates of vibration, known as enthusiasm.

Fire is one of the most important forces in human history. Initiative like fire is a visible, tangible side effect of thoughts changing into action. Using the tool of affirmation is the spark or match that begins the process to fire up the mind acting like a pre-game pep talk before you perform your work.

Personal written statements, favorite inspirational videos, sermon notes, favorite Bible verses, and photos are not the only types of affirmations. There are many types; numerical, visual, inspirational, verbal, and activity oriented.  A while back, our church bought thousands of wrist bands to hand out to members to wear and be reminded to pray. The arm bands have the words “God is Big Enough”. They are also used as a tool to share faith. Many stories continue to be told of people going through difficulty and a member of our church giving their wrist band to them. It reminds people that someone is praying for them and that God can get them through the situation.

The Internet makes available videos, quotes, and pictures that can be used to help you formulate affirmations. One I came across recently is a scene from the movie “Rudy” when he was discouraged and ready to quit because he didn’t make the team that suited up for the games. Rudy had always dreamed of playing football for Notre Dame but had to overcome many obstacles like size and talent. He convinces the coach to let him practice with the team with the hope of some day suiting up for a game and getting to run out on the field. Click on this Link for scenes from the movie.

Go to the Purpose Tool template at this Link. There is a tab at the bottom called Game Plan. Click on this tab and notice a section called pictures, videos, and quotes that inspire. Feel free to download the Purpose Tool Template and modify in a way that fits the purpose for which God has given you. Review the Game Plan tab each day this week and get in the habit of using it like a compass as you journey through life.

Enthusiasm

This day with God, live with enthusiasm. Live each day with passion knowing the future with God will be beyond what we could imagine.

Mark Shields's avatarStep Ahead

Lethargically
Walking through life
In a bad mood
And constant strife.

Always downtrodden
Within a chasm
Living without
Enthusiasm.

Time to find real magic
And live with passion
With each day bringing more
Than one could imagine.

A zest for life
And all its wonders
Setting out daily
To inspire others.

Providing the difference
Between ordinary
And giving what’s needed
As a visionary.

See, Believe, and Achieve

Being able to create in your mind where you would like to go or what you would like to do can turn a dream into active plans that will help make it come true. The beginning to planning and taking action starts with sharp and clear pictures of each step, each obstacle, each solution, and each character trait needed. In a way, creating in your mind a picture of what you aspire to do moves the future into the present. A person is not surprised when it comes true because they’ve already seen and experienced it in their dreams.

I’m reminded of a story a high school baseball coach told his team the day before a tournament. It was a story of a person who was not well. The person was bed ridden for several weeks and since he loved playing golf, decided to rest in his bed dreaming about playing rounds of golf. In his dreams, he would always see himself hitting the perfect shot. This went on for several weeks as he played rounds of golf in his head. When he got over his sickness several weeks later, he was able to go out to the golf course and shoot his best round of golf ever.

One of the coach’s players applied this story to baseball. That night, preparing for the game the next day, he dreamed about seeing the ball clearly and hitting the ball solid. He visualized a pitcher leaning, starting a wind up, and rocking back to deliver the ball; then seeing the pitcher’s arm whip over his head to deliver the pitch. He was so focused, even the seams of the ball were vivid and the ball seemed bigger than usual. He could see it coming into the strike zone and he visualized striding into the ball with all his weight. Then he started his swing and met the ball solid.

The next day at batting practice, the player could tell something was different. What he had dreamed about the night before was becoming real. The ball was jumping off the bat. The game started and everything felt perfect for his first at bat of the day. It also helped that the wind was blowing from home plate to right field. The first pitch was a ball outside so he knew the pitcher would probably throw him a fastball right down the middle of the plate. The ball came towards home plate and it was almost in slow motion. The player met the ball with perfect timing, the ball jumped off the bat, the wind carried the ball, and it kept going over the right field fence.

Even today the player remembers what the ball looked like coming towards the plate. You see, the player was me; my first home run. The lesson in thinking about this is that if you can imagine something happening in your mind, dream about it, and believe it can happen, there’s a much better chance it will.

Why do I write about this? Because I believe that this same concept of seeing, believing, and achieving on the baseball or softball field can be applied to life. Think of the businesses and organizations where this concept is used. The computer became a part of everyone’s life when companies developed software that allowed users to interact by entering information and graphically displaying useful and meaningful information on the screen. They could interact with the system, see it work right in front of their eyes, and achieve their work in a very efficient way.

Many churches today use multi-media in the worship service to help communicate God’s message. Communication and teaching is always enhanced when more of the person’s senses are involved in the learning process. The message being taught is not only communicated by sound but is also being displayed on a screen using words and images. Both sides of the brain get involved in the learning process and the student has a much better chance to see, believe, and achieve what is being taught.

The concept becomes even more meaningful when young people see good role models in parents, grandparents, teachers, and leaders. They start to model that behavior. They start to believe in that way of living. They build a winning tradition and increase their chances of achieving their own dreams.

Pray and ask God for the purpose He has for you. When He gives it to you, imagine what you will need to do. Like producing a movie, see the roles that will be played in the film as it is played out in reality. Focus and see a clear and detailed picture. A tool that can help document details is in the Purpose Tool Template at this link: Purpose Tool Template. At the bottom, click on the Game Plan tab and you will see a tool one can use to document various task. There is also an area to note Bible verses, quotes, ideas, or sermon thoughts that will inspire. It’s also a good idea along the way to accomplishment to note thoughts or ideas for continual Improvement.
