Share The Good News

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. – 2 Timothy 3:16-17

As shared in ”Fulfilling Our Mission”, the story of Jonah reminds us that God has a mission for each of us, just as Jesus fulfilled His mission on the cross to bring us renewed life. We are called to share the Good News of God’s grace, spreading His love and truth to those around us. This begins with reading the Word, living the Word, and sharing the Word, as scripture is a powerful tool for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training us in righteousness. Through faith and obedience, we align ourselves with God’s purpose and walk in the path He has set before us.

When God calls, who will answer? Whom shall He send? To truly hear, we must listen with open hearts, for His voice reaches us in ways both profound and gentle. When God calls, it is not merely a summons but an invitation—a divine purpose woven into our being. And in that moment, we stand ready, responding with faith and courage: As the song “Here I am, Lord.” says. We offer ourselves not out of obligation but out of love, trusting that His plan is greater than we can imagine.

Fulfilling Our Mission

Looking back so far at the Journey through the book of Jonah. God called Jonah to go to Nineveh and warn its people of their sinful ways, offering them a chance to turn back to Him. However, Jonah resisted this command and chose to flee, setting sail for Tarshish instead. In his attempt to escape God’s presence, Jonah embarked on a journey that would ultimately reveal the futility of running from the purpose God has for each of us. When we listen to God and follow His direction, what seems ordinary can become extraordinary as He blesses our days with remarkable moments and guides us in ways beyond our expectations.

Reading today Jonah 3, the mission to Nineveh was to warn the people about how they were living and to turn to God. Jonah didn’t obey the first time but was given a second chance to carry out his work for the Lord.

Jonah’s mission was clear and direct—he was tasked with delivering God’s truth to the people of Nineveh. His responsibility was not to soften the message or alter its meaning but to boldly proclaim the corruption that plagued the city. His approach was straightforward, leaving no room for ambiguity. In verse 4, Jonah warned them of the impending disaster God would bring upon them, a message meant to stir urgency and provoke repentance. His words carried the weight of God’s judgment, emphasizing the seriousness of the city’s moral failings and the inevitable consequences if they refused to turn from their wickedness.

Jonah fulfilled his duty by delivering God’s warning, but it was ultimately God who softened the hearts of the people of Nineveh. Moved by the message, they believed in God, recognizing the urgency of their need for change. In response, they fasted and repented, humbling themselves before Him. Their sincere repentance led to a restored relationship not only with God but also within their community, as they turned away from their former ways and embraced a renewed path of righteousness.

The story of Jonah reminds us that God has a mission for each of us, just as Jesus fulfilled His mission on the cross to bring us renewed life.

This day with God, let us embrace the richness of God’s Word, a treasure beyond measure, guiding hearts and minds with wisdom and truth. Through Christ, the Son, we are invited to grow in grace, discovering the boundless love that transforms and renews. This eternal wealth is not meant to be hoarded but shared, spreading kindness, faith, and hope to those around us. As we pour out the blessings we receive, we draw closer to one another and are unified in following God’s purpose for each of us. Let us listen to the instructions and follow His directions.

Father God, we come before You with humble hearts, seeking Your wisdom and guidance. Help us Lord to listen attentively to Your instructions and follow Your directions. Help us to courageously act when You call us to fulfill Your purpose. Let our faith be more than words – let it move and let it shine so that we make an impact in the lives of others. May we boldly step ahead rather than flee, like Jonah did. May Your Spirit live within us to shape our thoughts and lead us towards actions that glorify You Lord as we seek to build communities that reflect Your truth and grace. Communities with high standards that challenge, uplift, and inspire. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Bless Within the Mess

Jonah said: “In my distress I called to the Lord, and he answered me. From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help, and you listened to my cry.” – Jonah 2:2

Just as Jonah was swallowed by the great fish as discussed in “Help To Pull Through and Press On”, we too can feel overwhelmed by the burdens of life – whether struggles at work, challenges at home, or personal hardships that seem too great to bear. Yet, Jonah’s story reminds us that no situation is beyond God’s power. No matter how deep we sink, God is bigger than the “big fish” that threatens to consume us. His salvation and mercy are always within reach, and through faith, we can trust that He will carry us through. Jonah’s experience encourages us to rely on God’s strength, knowing that He is our ultimate deliverer.

The difficulties that occur in life wreak havoc on us. The small stuff can add up to equal one big issue. Like the song This Is The Stuff by Francesca Battistelli, God can use our difficulties and within our mess God can bless. All we need to do is trust and obey.

Help to Pull Through and Press On

Life often brings disappointments, with circumstances beyond our control and past experiences that leave us struggling. Yet, during these challenges, God offers His steady help. When we call upon the King of heaven, He gives us the strength to persevere, turning obstacles into steppingstones that guide us toward the path we are meant to follow. By pressing forward with faith, we can transform hardships into opportunities for growth and progress.

In Jonah 2, we see a remarkable moment of faith that leads to growth, progress, and gratitude amid deep distress. Swallowed by a great fish, Jonah finds himself in a place of utter helplessness, yet instead of despair, he turns to God in prayer. From inside the belly of the fish, he acknowledges God’s sovereignty and offers words of praise. His prayer is not merely a plea for rescue but an expression of trust and gratitude, recognizing that even in the depths, God’s mercy and salvation are present. Jonah’s response demonstrates that worship and thanksgiving can arise even in the darkest of circumstances.

In times of distress, many people struggle to turn to prayer, seeking relief in other ways instead. Some may turn to substances like drugs or alcohol in an attempt to numb their pain, while others may find temporary comfort in excessive eating, using food as a coping mechanism for stress. These alternatives, though providing momentary distraction, often fail to bring true peace or healing. Unlike prayer, which offers a connection to something greater and a source of lasting comfort, these habits can lead to deeper struggles rather than genuine relief.

Jonah made a solemn vow to surrender himself as a sacrifice to God, recognizing that his disobedience had brought the storm upon the sailors. In an act of faith and responsibility, he told them to throw him into the sea, knowing it was the only way to calm the raging waters. When the sailors reluctantly followed his instruction, the sea immediately became still, demonstrating God’s power and mercy. Jonah’s willingness to give himself up reflects a moment of surrender and trust in God’s sovereignty, even during his own consequences.

Jonah 2 teaches valuable lessons about faith and reliance on God in times of trouble. When faced with difficult situations, turning to the Lord in prayer brings strength and guidance. Jonah’s experience shows that even in the depths of distress, faithfulness to God leads to deliverance. Trusting in Him allows one to overcome challenges, knowing that He is present to guide and provide. Just as God rescued Jonah, He remains a source of salvation for all who seek Him with a faithful heart.

This day with You God, we reach out to You to pull us out of our situations. Like Jonah, sometimes we feel that we are being swallowed by a big fish with problems at work or at home. Difficulties in life wreak havoc on us as we get swallowed by bills to pay, bad health, terrible relationships, and many other issues. You God are bigger than the big fish so help us to hold on to our faith until these issues subside, and joy resides inside. Give us strength and guidance as we trust in Your way and pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
