One Small Step

This poem is about the 1969 Apollo 11 mission which was the first manned mission to land on the moon. In 1969 as a boy growing up, I loved space and science. Probably one reason was because it was on the news back then. Today, you turn on the news and all you see is negative stories about how bad things are. I wish news organizations would report some positives every once in a while so kids today could dream like we used to.

Step Ahead

In the late sixties
Filled with elation
Captivated by science
And space exploration.

The news was positive
No pessimism
And the future
Full of optimism.

Discoveries abound
And it was sweet
Not so negative
And always downbeat.

Young people need a lift
Not doom and gloom
Like back in the day
When man walk on the moon.

Looking ahead to a future
With peace of mind
One small step for man,
One giant leap for mankind

Take a look at this video. It’s only 1 minute 11 seconds and is a video of the 1969 Apollo 11 mission which was the first manned mission to land on the moon Neil Armstrong One Small Step.

  1. Like you, I watched those early rocket launches, and the moon walk, and I dreamed of places and possibilities far beyond my imagination. Young people today can’t think past the smart phones in their hands and believe they’ve reached and comprehended the extent of the universe … and the other smart phone user sitting next to them.
