What Makes You Angry?

Yesterday, I shared an outline of the sermon message at the church I attend. A take away from the message for me is that many things can make us angry or frustrated in life. Being angry is not a sin in itself but how we react to the anger can lead to sin.

Here are some possible things that might make you angry:

  • You buy food at a fast food restaurant and you get home and they left out part of your order
  • Driving behind a slow driver
  • Watching the news
  • Add more you can think of in the comments

We all deal with anger, frustration, and hurt feelings. Maybe someone has spread gossip about you that is not true. Maybe you work with a demeaning boss.

On the other hand, there are times when anger can make a right wrong like when there is a need in society. Think about orphanages. Someone was angry about children not having a home and thought of a solution. Think of Habitat for Humanity. Someone was angry that some could not afford their own house and was angry enough to form an organization that could make it happen.

There are certain ways to react to anger and the Bible teaches us to reflect before reacting and to respond wisely. As we follow the teachings of the Bible, we learn to develop skills in how best to respond to anger. We learn that we don’t have to repress it but confess it and ask for God’s help.

God can transform us with his amazing grace. We begin a process of change that seeks accountability by taking things step by step. We choose friends wisely that will give correction when needed and lift us up to make us a better person. Aiming high is harder but it’s what God wants us to do. Like this video suggest, ask Him to take you higher: Take Me Higher – Lincoln Brewster.

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will know God’s will for you …” Romans 12:2ab (NLT)

    What makes me angry?
A remark from another that touches a nerve because it exposes my own hypocrisy or wrongdoing.
That is, a hurtful remark that has an element of truth.
So, just who am I angry with? Sometimes anger is relished. But, there’s just no fun in being angry at yourself.

I concur with Steve above. What also makes me angry are things that hurt others— injustices, apathy, legalism accompanied with condemnation, and abuse. Oftentimes the anger I feel is mixed with sorrow.
