Matthew 9:9-17

Passage Lookup

The Pharisees where asking questions like why Jesus hung around the wrong crowd? They also questioned about following the law. The Law of Moses is about following the commandments and Jesus teaches here about getting the heart right so one can follow the commandments.

It’s easy to look at others and criticize like the Pharisees did in this passage. Jesus does just the opposite by accepting, appreciating, and affirming others. God always takes us back into His arms. Think about it: Moses was a murderer and David was an adulterer yet God used them for great purposes. Moses was used by God to lead His people out of Egypt to the Promised Land. David was used by God to write many of the Psalms we lean on for faith and encouragement.

Today, I learned that I should accept, appreciate, and affirm others but write criticism in the sand near the water’s edge. I’m praying that the Spirit will work within me to follow what Jesus has taught in today’s lesson.

About Mark Shields

Mark volunteers as a member of the media ministry team at his church. A few years ago, he started an on-line Bible study guide called “This Day with God Devotional”. He uses this as a tool in his journey through the Bible. We live in a very busy world with busy schedules so this tool has helped him continue with daily Bible reading and study. Each of the studies are designed to help apply our faith in the work place, at school, or at home. Join him on this journey or check in every so often to read his thoughts.
