Those of the Way Continue to Pray

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” – John 14:6

As written about in the post “Good Advice for Us in Today’s World”, there were people who felt threatened by the gospel message because they thought it interfered with their business pursuits. Those who made silver images of the goddess named Artemis (moon goddess Diana) were not tolerant of the gospel taught by Paul. It is amazing that after all these years, it’s not that much different today.

What is important today for those who believe in the Way is to get across that Christianity works well in society because there is the understanding that God has made us all for a purpose and we need to celebrate our diversity.

With this in mind, those of the Way should continue to pray and here’s a song that highlights this point: Pray for You – The Swon Brothers.

Good Advice for Us in Today’s World

A new wave of opposition to the gospel taught by Paul erupted as explained in Acts 19:23-41. A silversmith named Demetrius who made silver images of the goddess named Artemis (moon goddess Diana) started a riot because he felt the Way was a threat to their lucrative business. The thought was that once people were saved, they would get rid of their silver images.

In current times, those of the Way continue to be a threat to some. There is the threat to power, money, and influence. Democrats against Republicans, businesses against government agencies, and Muslims against Jews and Christians.

The riot in today’s reading was brought to an end as people discussed their differences and it was explained that grievances must be handled in a legal assembly (v. 39). Isn’t this some good advice for us in today’s world? The gospel message can work well even in a society in which various viewpoints are allowed to be expressed but it must be in a peaceful way.

Sometimes leaders can push into directions that a society does not need to go. They have the attitude that their way is the only way and those that don’t follow exactly their way can hit the highway. They will not listen to the other side because they can make more money by keeping people stirred up. Sometimes greed can cause people to want more and more until they lose what they do have.

This day with You Lord, help us to understand that we can make a great difference in this world because Your Way does not tempt us to judge but reminds us that everyone has tremendous value in Your eyes. Lord … forgive us when our differences cause us to fight against each other until we lose what we did have. Lord, we are thankful that Your Way works best because the objective is to build up people rather than tear them down. Help us today as we keep these thoughts in mind. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

Doing Something That Gives Him Glory

As explained in the post “Applying Our Faith Produces Extraordinary Results” Paul did just as the title says. During Paul’s time and in current times, God works in various ways to guarantee the spread of His word.

This day with God, let us pay attention to our dreams and take action. God blesses those who seek His advice and follow through on His guidance. The Spirit is with us giving thoughts and ideas to shape the future in a positive way.

Receive inspiration from today’s video: Do Something – Matthew West.

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. – James 1:22-24

Applying Our Faith Produces Extraordinary Results

As explained in Acts 19:11-22, God produced extraordinary results in Ephesus. Handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched Paul were taken to the sick and their illnesses were cured. There were some who went around trying to drive out evil spirits by unleashing the power of the gospel themselves; invoking the name of the Lord Jesus when trying to drive out the evil spirits from demon-possessed souls.

The fear of the Lord consumed the people of the city when they saw the punishment received by those who deceptively used the name of the Lord to drive out evil spirits. They were punished for their duplicity and the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power (v. 20).

After Paul stayed in Ephesus for 2 ½ years, he started to make plans for the future and took some steps to fulfill those plans. He sent Timothy and Erastus to Macedonia to prepare the believers for his coming. He also started planning for a visit to Rome.

Today, the world would be better off if guidance received was more from God through His Word and through prayer rather than from secular thought. Prayer is our greatest power because we are talking to the ONE who has the answers.

Lord, this day with You, we pray that we put Your guidance into practice rather than relying on deceptive guidance from those with their own agenda. Like Paul, help us to plan out our Christian service for the future. Help us with the instructions we need to fulfill those plans. We know this day will be amazing because we will be putting Your guidance into practice. In Jesus name. Amen.

The Week Ahead

This week, we will be sharing some thoughts from the study of Acts 19. Here are some questions for reflection of Acts 19:11-22:

What extraordinary results does God produce in Ephesus? What long-range plans do you have for your Christian service? What steps will you need to take to fulfill those plans?

Here are some questions for reflection of Acts 19:23-41

What causes the new wave of opposition? What brings it to an end? What does this incident reveal about the results of the gospel in society?
